The burden of proof is on the prosecution in all criminal cases in the United States.
I used to believe that. The Enron/Merrill Lynch convictions and the death of unconvicted accused persons while in custody shook that belief. There have been numerous cases since which have convinced me it is no longer true.

I don't trust any prosecutor to work in service to the cause of justice.

Agree. And about 30 years ago it began to shift from “finding truth” to “wins and losses”. Thus, almost every day you can read about inventing evidence, etc. because that shift is complete. The only people that believe otherwise are in the law profession, and, well, they gotta keep up the perception of legitimacy.

Agree. They gotta add to the win column.

That's kind of sad. As far as I know, our state prosecutors don't even keep track of wins and losses. At least, nobody's ever asked me about mine.

That is very sad that some folks perceive the justice system in that way.

In 28 years in LE, I've known many practitioners on both side of the aisle. I've even gone out to drinks with both side together and even had them over to dinner

While both sides have ones who would "go for the win", the vast majority were just trying to make the system work the way it was designed

I wish I could fully explain my distrust of the current crop of prosecutors and judges but, A) off topic; and B) it would probably be interpreted as "too political." Suffice to say, I have far more trust for the LEO's I know than the prosecutors I don't. If asked to sign a declaration of negative proof (that I have not done a thing in a certain period of time) or face potential prosecution, I will opt to take the position of not placing myself at potential risk. It's not possible to prove a negative in a court of law and, in the case of a signed declaration, the prosecutor can get an indictment for "giving false testimony" and use it as an excuse to dig up something else for more serious charges. The process is the punishment.
I know it can be done because it has been done, and very recently, to people with far more power and money than I'll ever have.

"Dear State of CO, if you think I have not continuously possessed my magazines for the appropriate time period, prove it."

So you're saying that you will take cases pro-bono? :D

Its not like this law is new... USPSA BOD knew this for years.

What about Birmingham?
You're right.

I can't remember why we didn't fly into Birmingham, rather than Atlanta, the last time we had a match at Talladega. Maybe we did and I'm mis-remembering .

I just remember thinking of how big a race the Talladega 500 was and surprised they didn't have an airport there

Talladega has an airport near the race track. I’ve flown into it numerous times.
However, it’s a general aviation airport 6,000’ long. Suitable for business jets, and turboprops but no commercial air traffic.
Birmingham has commercial traffic, and an Air National Guard detachment., but nothing like Atlanta, the busiest airport in the world...

Though not remote like much of the open west, Talladega is decidedly rural. CMP Talladega is only about 7 miles from the race track (visible from I-20), or airport, but you can’t exactly get to it from there! The mountain you see in the background is in the Talladega National Forrest, approximately 750,000 acres of remote access Appalachian mountain terrain.
It’s beautiful! I grew up in Anniston, Al approximately 35mi northeast of Talladega.

You’ll be amazed at the Talladega CMP facility. It’s a country club for shooters, and shooting!
I’ve shot several matches on the 600yd John C.Garand range, and Range 1. (100yd Bullseye target range). Familiarize yourself by visiting their website. Access to various ranges is limited on scheduled match events. Transport by golf carts by facility personnel is available. I strongly suggest an equipment cart!

Enjoy your stay, but be forewarned that there is limited motel accommodations except in Oxford/Anniston. or close into Birmingham.
Downtown Anniston in 50’s or 60’s was any-town USA. We never locked our doors. Crime was a west side issue. Now however, I won’t go off Quintard Ave after dark. Even passing through is an adventure...

When we were there for the last IDPA World Shoot, I think the match holtel was the Courtyard by Marriott in Anniston. The over flow hotel was the Fairfield Inn & Suites...across the street from a Waffle House

That was actually Oxford!
Oxford is run by publicans... Anus-ton, by cRats....Over the hill and through the gully north of Oxford... (Snow creek). Heard of the Monsanto SuperSite -cleanup environmental disaster site? Yep! SW Anniston or Ann-Oxyia as we called it in late 60’s. At least it was down stream and down wind when I was growing up.
Anniston is a welfare ghetto ghost town of what I grew up in.

While not as many options as Oxford/Anniston, I’ve stayed at the Pell City exit. Same distance other direction.
