Something glossed over in all this is not the flagrant violation of privacy, as that's ipso facto.
No, what's being glossed over is that some human will have to apply manhours to examining all that data.

That's not easy work. It's slow and tedious. It requires meticulous attention to detail, and documented accuracy by the reviewer.* It will require weeks. The delay will amount to no more than a "show good cause" separation of the People against themselves.

Above that, it will not be cheap, the State will want some way to defray the absurd expense of investigating the law abiding for examples of illegality. At New York rates, the cheapest this sort of investigation is like to run is $2000 to $2500. Justice Thomas went to considerable effort documenting the rare and specific historical precedents for forcing Peace or Surety Bonds upon the law-abiding. Dividing the People against themselves based on ability to pay will also be found wanting of 14th Amendment compliance.

Now, the above will be a huge impetus by dot gov to generate shortcuts, to use bots or the like; keyword searching of the social accounts. which creates yet further issues (encryption of accounts, for just the one)**

The question remains as to whether it will take another decade of lawsuits to settle out.

*The law will, naturally, not address the implications of being denied by way of Reviewer incompetency, nor of the 4th Amendment implications the process will be rife with.
**The 6th Amendment implications of not being able to confront one's "accuser" beggar imagination. This is why real, actual, Background Investigations are long and complicated, and require extensive documentation.

It can quite easily cost a LOT more than what you're hypothesizing here. It can run upwards of $15,000 for background checks within the federal government and military.

And those periodicities are 5, 10, or 15 years, depending on the security level.

This is truly scary. And what a rabbit hole these sickening politicians are now choosing to go down...

From the article:The new rule will require anyone applying for a handgun license to provide a list of social media accounts they’ve maintained for the past three years. This is meant to verify an applicant’s “essential character, temperament, and judgment” and determine whether or not they can be trusted with a weapon. In the past, many mass shooters, such as Uvalde school shooter Salvador Ramos, outlined their plans on social media.
Doesn’t bother me at all
I have nothing to worry about and I don’t care

Sure, me too. I don't care about the friggin' 4th Amendment and I don't care about my right to privacy. I have nothing to hide. Says the frog as the burner under the pan of water he's swimming in gets turned up a little more...

And red light cameras are only for catching guys who run red lights, while the DOT cameras on the overpasses are only for monitoring highway traffic... the government will never misuse or abuse any of the systems.

And we don't care about anything some guy named Snowden ever revealed, nor do we care how the government ignores habeas corpus while innocent folks have sat in resort spas such as Guantanamo Bay for fifteen years or more without even having been charged with a crime.

Some trusting souls, this lot.

Social media flagged by bots ... I get a lot of AOL comments flagged based on word matches, that are later approved after a human moderator decides my comment is within "Community standards".
I call these bots "artificial unintelligence" and if they are used to profile social media posts, it's stupid.

I have refrained from signing up for FB, Twitter, Instagram, etc... for over a decade. Every once in a while I get an inkling to start a FB page, I think if I had a page it would promote conservative Christian family values and could be viewed positively by some. But I'm 99% of the time have no interest in social media.

THR is as far as it goes for me and it isn't really "social media" in the sense that I regard social media. Occasionally drop a comment on YT but other than that I'm a ghost online beside some pictures of me on my wife's FB page and she isn't really active on FB either. It's very rare for people in my age group not to be plugged in and I'm kind of glad of it......

......everything went straight to hell in the last 15-20 years, which happens to coincide with the massive proliferation of social media platforms and everybody thinking they need to post every aspect of their life and all the hateful jabs and anonymous sparring everybody does with each other on every facet of life from religion, politics, gender theories, 2A, toilet paper hoarding, breast feeding, child development, disciplining your children, etc.............

You'd be called out as a racist, white supremacist, right-wing extremist and... cancelled. Read the article by the journalist (black) who said in a nationally-printed article that she was scared driving through a neighborhood where all the houses were flying American flags, because that was a symptom of racist America and white supremacy?

For this requirement to actually work, an applicant would need to surrender their passwords for Facebook, Snapchat, Twitter and Instagram accounts. That's because millions of people set their accounts to 'private' and are only visible to those deemed as 'friends'.

The “good character” portion reminds me of the Jim Crow laws down south. I can’t see this holding up in court, but it’ll take years to settle it.

I glad I don’t live in NY. These types of laws will accelerate the exodus of their citizens to other states.

Why do you guy have Social Media accounts anyways??? it’s just not worth it. I drop Facebook 5 years ago because I knew what it could become ^^^^^^ this a monitoring system. Look at China’s social credit system with million & million of Face ID camera.

So you believe that this will be the source of governmental invasion of your privacy?
Seriously?
Technology today is more invasive and shielded than ever before.
i guess that you missed the horrendous elimination of freedoms from the Patriot Act.
In the whole scheme of things today, this is much ado about nothing.
You need to worry about really invasive technology like Echelon.

I have nothing to worry about and I don’t care

You would be an investigators joy.

That may sound like snark, but it's most assuredly NOT. That's perhaps the oldest line in the law enforcement book and I dare say there are few, if any, attorneys out there who wouldn't love to drive this point home to everybody.

Not having anything to worry sbout in your personal history/behavior doesn't mean you don't actually have anything to worry about from the government.

It ought to remind EVERYBODY of this, because that's EXACTLY what they are...Jim Crow laws.

Again...welcome to THR, a social media site.

I use the internet (and selected social media sites) as part of an informal advertising routine - generating customers for my guiding and lure making business. Over the years it's proved reasonably effective (and since magazines, and their advertising, are pretty much going out of business...) that internet presence, along with referrals is my total advertising effort these days, period.

I do follow one simple policy though.. I was taught never to say or write anything that I wouldn't be perfectly willing to post up on a sign next to my house.... and that's worked for many years now. Are there opinions I keep to myself? Oh yeah...

They should do the same with the first amendment. Stop all the false data.

They're trying. Very hard.

Did you listen to the Zuckerberg Congressional Inquisition? Remember hearing a Congressman saying "You'll fix this or we will fix it for you"?

Every major social media site stood up and took notice of that, you can bet. Don't think it's an infringement of freedom of speech when private businesses censure what people post on their websites? What of it's EXACTLY because of government threats like this? How's that First Amendment "freedom of speech" working out for people now?

Before I quit FB ten years ago or so, I had one friend I would post about gun stuff with. He very rarely posted anything. He was too busy out doing cool stuff.

And there's the reason why I quit FB. Too many negative vibes. It isn't a happy place.
