NY Already Planning to Nullify Supreme Court Decision

"Applicants will have to show they have "the essential character, temperament and judgment necessary to be entrusted with a weapon and to use it only in a manner that does not endanger oneself and others."

I guess people with handguns are required to be checked to see if they're crazy, but not long gun owners who are not required to go through this BS. Makes a lot of sense.

it comes down to the street fighters the communist Democrats are. the SC makes a ruling they tell them to shove it and do what they want. it is only the coward GOP that genuflects before judges who hate them when they rule against them. like the fake tough guy trump when judges blocked his wall he backed away instead doing it anyway then sending troops there to watch over the wall const.
the right wing is obsessed with saying we are law abiding. this is music to the Democrats who keep shoving laws down their throats

It does seem a bit vindictive, not unlike the "leak" in Ca.

Has there been any indication as to how the folks already possessing permits will be treated? Will they be revisited to ensure they meet the new perameters or grandfathered in until such time they need a renewal? Or did I completely miss it somewhere?

From my reading of the bill linked above, it *appears* (doesn't mean I'm right) that when you're due to recertify, you will need to have taken the NYS approved 18 hours of training before you can recertify.

I was born and raised in NY. Between that and ongoing contact with my relatives, I know this well: You have no idea how deeply embedded the engram "guns is bad" is in their heads.

Not true of all NYers, but it's rather like the reaction to snakes and spiders.

Not a rant. Facts of life.

Facts.

My cousin's wife, a NYC resident, once told me she would rather be killed than pick up a gun to defend herself.

I don't know how much more anti you can get than that. When you're dealing with people with that mind set, there is no logic involved and they will never have a reasonable thought about guns or care about anyone else's perspective.

An infamous cover of NYC's signature magazine:

Yeah, I know, "denigrating a whole class of people..."

Getting on toward becoming a rant now, so I'll shut up.

The part of this discussion that confuses me is, did anyone expect New York to react differently? Did anyone think New York would just throw up their hands and suddenly become a Shall Issue state? If you did, go back and read the story of the frog and the scorpion. If you don't like what NY did, and you live in NY, realize you are never going to defeat the urban New York voting block at the ballot box so vote with your feet.

NY's governor has called the legislature into an emergency session for a workaround to the SC decision ordering the state to grant more concealed carry licenses. Her plan is to make people applying for a license jump through many more hoops, i.e., more training, a written test, interviews, etc, and restrict places guns can be carried, and in typical NY fashion, go completely overboard in the number of restricted areas. Also, little or no discussion before a vote and once again no time for the public to respond.

There are so many restricted areas that will overlap that a person would probably have no idea they may be in one. But beware, carrying in a restricted area would be a felony, punishable by up to 4 years in prison.

From a NY Times article:

"Legislators are considering, for example, adding new requirements for New Yorkers to receive a concealed carry permit, including 16 hours of training on how to handle a handgun, two hours of firing range training, an in-person interview and a written exam, according to internal legislative memos obtained by The New York Times.

Though Ms. Hochul said she had reached an agreement with her Democratic colleagues in the Legislature on the broad contours of the bill, lawmakers were still finalizing the details and the precise language on Thursday afternoon, with a vote expected later in the night.

Legislative leaders and the governor appeared to have reached an agreement on a list of locations where guns would be banned: health care facilities, including nursing homes and domestic violence shelters; houses of worship; colleges and universities; places where children gather, such as day care centers, playgrounds, parks and zoos; public transportation; places where alcohol or cannabis is consumed; and theaters, arenas, concerts, casinos and other entertainment venues.

Under the plan being considered, carrying a weapon in a prohibited area would amount to a felony punishable by up to four years in prison."

Here's the article: https://www.nytimes.com/2022/06/30/nyregion/handgun-concealed-carry-ny.html

Color me shocked.

New Yorkers have the means to change their state government this fall, I have the same type governor in NJ and have to live with it for 3 yrs. I hope NY voters are more successful. Soon the word "Despot" will be more correct when referring to them.

Exactly.

New Yorkers are the people who need to step up now.

Interestingly, it can be as simple as thousands upon thousands of businesses posting "CCW WELCOME HERE" signs, as a start.

They need to grow their own support systems and take the challenge to the polls as well as the courts.
