*Perhaps my title is wrong. As some of you correctly pointed out, this isn’t “2nd A” advertisement. I think I should have said “Thoughts on using guns in this type of campaign ad.”

I’m not asking if you are R, D, I, etc- that’s not the point. I’m curious what folks think of this add: is it appropriate, does it help/hurt the cause of the 2A, is it too far considering some recent events?

If you don’t want to click the link, search “Jerone for Congress gun ad” and you’ll find plenty of options.

Didn't watch the ad because I'm not clicking on any link involving twitter, fb or the like. I'll just say if it's anything like the one Greitens put out recently, I don't see it helping our cause. I've grown tired of guns as campaign props.
Not sure about what you’re mentioning, but it’s probably close.

That advertisement seemed a tad breathless and over-the-top to me.
Better traction focusing on $500 grocery store bills and $100 gasoline fill-ups.
Typical financial issues normal people face daily. We know 2A standpoints.
It seemed like it’s point was more for views than to have real substance.

It's a bit campy. . . but the disarmament of former slaves was the purpose of many of the first gun control schemes across the South. I'd say it's as historically representative as much of passes for history in public education today.

The ad is emotional fluff and uses racial tensions to its definite advantage.

On one hand it is a bit under-handed to use the the same tactics that the antis use against us. On the other hand I bet it's effective in making some minority fence sitters give guns a chance.

I hadn’t thought about the minority fence sitter as the target audience. He’s running in AZ, so I’m not sure what his district looks like, but you could be spot on.

I get his point about guns for defensive purposes, but I think it could've been better conveyed had he portrayed a regular home invasion with regular criminals instead of the silly Klansman theatrics. Yes I know gun control is racist, but that doesn't mean we need to stoop to their level and play the same angle.

I think it works because it seems that gun controllers are usually liberals who imagine racism. I think associating Democrats with klansmen, however historically accurate it may be, likely turns off those who are registered Democrats or who might subscribe to some liberal beliefs. That said, the ad creates a dilemma for liberals… specifically, ‘if I don’t support gun rights, then am I supporting racism?” In my observations, those who subscribe to gun control are uninformed nitwits who read headlines and believe whatever they’re told (that background checks aren’t required, that guns can be mailed straight to your door, that a 9mm blows lungs right out of the body, etc). I think this ad plays to the slow-witted, shorts their brain circuitry, and plants a seed that gun control fosters racism, whether true or not.

I like it because it addresses the fact that many of the early gun control laws were aimed at minorities but at the same time, it appeals to the (reverse) racist among the minorities.

Disappointed to not see hoods and sheets shot up a la Castle Wolfenstein, though...

This is not a "pro-2nd Amendment" ad. (That is, it's not designed to promote the RKBA.) It's an ad for a candidate, designed to exploit existing pro-2nd Amendment sentiment in the district. And since the candidate is Black, it's designed to counteract the assumption that all Black politicians are against guns. (The intended audience is not Black voters, since there are so few of them in the district (1.8% of the district population is Black)). Anyway, it's unlikely that the candidate can successfully attack the incumbent, Paul Gosar, from the right -- which is what he is trying to do.

Interesting take on it. I am inclined to agree with your point “this is not a pro-2nd amendment ad,” but rather exploit sentiment. AZ has been a very gun-friendly state, not sure about this district. Anyways, thanks for your thoughts.

I think some of you are overthinking it. His point is that there are legitimate purposes for standard capacity magazines and semi auto rifles, and those who don't understand or accept that are either ignorant or want to dominate and bully others. So if you agree vote for him. Whether he'll support pro 2A legislation is something we would have to assume.

We're not living in the genteel age of William F. Buckley and erudite discussions of the finer points of logic. No one listens to facts.

The add completely fails at the point the klansmen - advancing with garden tools - are referred to as Democrats.

And when I say fails, I mean it will fail to win over anyone who is not already both pro-gun and anti-Democrat. It will also likely fail to win over anyone "on the fence" who is capable of making two plus two equal four.

I don’t know if he’s going for that crowd- my guess (I’m from GA and know nothing about this guy) is he’s an unknown and is trying to poach conservative, pro 2A. I also suspect he doesn’t have a big name recognition and he made a “shock video” hoping it would go viral to get his name out there. I agree with you, I don’t think this will make somebody change sides.

Creative. Having a morning cup of coffee with rifle when attackers come including one with bat from Walking Dead.

He used to be (maybe still is) a pastor, so I think he was using that as “coffee and prayer” time to appeal to the religious crowd, without being to overt.
