I just pulled the numbers and didn't break them down by hunting versus target.
 
I think Popularity of certain rounds also has a regional component to it. Your magnum calibers are going to be more popular out west where larger animals (elk for example) are more common and the ranges at which you shoot are generally longer.
I considered getting rid of my 7 mag recently (just moved from Washington to Alabama) but decided to keep it for now. Never know what opportunities will arise in the future.

There are still a fair number of Squatch sightings in Alabama and lots in Georgia and Florida. Not as many as in Washington where you came from, but I am assuming that's why you needed the magnum there. It will still be handy where you are now, though the farther south you go the smaller the Squatches seem to be. Still, best to be overprepared; better too much gun than not enough. My question is what ammo are you using? Don't want a through and through and just p*** him off.

I mean, the squatches are not to be underestimated. That said, things like a growing elk population in Kentucky as well as being a bit of a traveler, Has me holding on to it.

Yeah, the Squatches brought the elk with them when they began to migrate Southeast. They ride them, use them for food. Probably other stuff. Now the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation or whoever will try to tell you they worked with other organizations to reintroduce the elk to the Eastern part of the country. Wrong. They saw the writing on the wall and took credit for the whole thing. Sounds crazy, I know. But that's what one of the friendly green aliens told me the last time the abducted me for my monthly probing. Good hunting!

I went from Illinois to Alabama myself a few years back and thought much the same thing. My experience so far has not held true though. A good number of hunters here use magnum rifles. I think it's a reflection of the popularity of hunting clubs with box blinds set up in green fields. Power line right of ways through the mountains with feeders are very common set ups too.

Yes I could certainly see that. Plenty of massive Ag fields and powerline cuts. Not so much right around me I moved up into the mountains surrounding the Talladega National Forest on the edge of the cheeha wilderness. Most the area here is steep hills and thick forest with the exception of some hay fields and pastures.

that said any tips on areas in Central Alabama to start my search for hogs? They are very sparse up around me ( thank goodness) so I’m going to have to go find them. Have ammo, will travel.

If you want to hunt pigs that can be tough on public lands since baiting isn't allowed there and the animals seem to be more concentrated around ag. Lots of private landowners trap them or lease out to people who trap/hunt. There are a bunch of outfitters offering pig hunts for a couple hundred bucks a night. My experience and what I've heard from others as well is it's very much sporadic. You either see nothing or get covered up in big herds. During deer season hogs are kind of a bonus animal if one happens to show up while on a stand.

Friend of mine has a Fierce and really likes it.....they are a custom copy of the sako 85 arnt they? Ill admit ive played with a few but never taken one apart.

The rage is based on the sako 85, which is the one I want. The rival is based on the rem 700
