THE "holy grail" revolver!

I think I get the OP’s intention, many times we want what we don’t have or is hard to find. In all of my interests I have found that the “hunt” for something seems to be a driving force, the acquisition is satisfying, but with time I want something else. In the old English the word “want” was used more like our word “lacking”.

the holy grail of revolvers is subjective. you can certainly find an expensive rare gun but it can lack personal value to some folks. for some people it's the 2" S&W model 34, for others it's a 6" Colt Python, while others want a Korth in any flavor...

I think the point @UncleEd was making is that guns that are considered rare now only rare because they aren’t the standard that manufacturers put out. 3” and 5” wouldn’t be rare if S&W had made those sizes and not the 4” and 6” barrels. The 4” and 6” would be the “grail guns”.

For me a good example is my desire for a 3” .357 magnum revolver. Had to have one. Why? Because I fell for the idea that 3” is preferred. I got me a 3” model 60 Pro. It was a fine gun for what it was until I started having issues with it, but the reality for me was it just wasn’t what I thought it should be from all the hype I have heard over 3” revolvers. I believe a 4” barrel would have actually been better for my needs…that and an extra hole in the cylinder.

The .357 registered magnum is my holy grail gun. Until I can find that unicorn, my 29-2 is probably my most prized. Made sometime in 1978, it has the 6" barrel and other than the factory test firing, it has exactly 6 rds through the pipe. Growing up, Harry Callahan was my idol. 20220716_161059.jpg

Meh. I've no particular love for Pythons or Korths... I'm a simple man, easily satisfied by a SAA... beginning with a Ruger New Vaquero, 4-3/4" barrel in .357 Magnum; shipped to H. Bowen for his magic touch... perfection of the timing and action, followed by hard chroming of said action, weld and machine the top strap in the S&W M&P style; and replace the front sight with a plain serrated ramp.

I think I'd like a gunsmithed Colt Python with a nice set of finger groove grips in rosewood. Adjustable sights, 6" barrel, partial shroud.

My grail gun would be the first N-frame of all time, the triple lock 44 special target model of 1917. I would want target sights on mine, which would make it harder to find.
It already was offered in a 5 in barrel with the first model, and 5 1/2" in the second model and with half lug barrels for both.

Their standardization on even numbered barrels must have come later on. The first N-frame revolvers had both odd and even length barrels.

My current holy grail is a S&W K frame with a 3" barrel model 10,13,64 or 65 one comes up on Gunbroker once in a while but I'm not paying 7 or 8 hundred bucks for one.

I now have several revolvers for which I had been searching:

3.5" barrel Model 27-2 .357 magnum

Model 13-4 3" RB .357 magnum

625-7 Mountain Gun in .45 Colt

There are others as well...I have a mental list of what I'd like to own and if I see one at a decent price, I will acquire it. The issue is price; I've seen Registered Magnums and Triple Locks for sale, but for far too much money.

My Holy Grail revolver is quite mundane to many folk.

I have a "thing" for matching pistols,,,
One in centerfire and the other one in .22 rimfire.

I own several pairs such as my S&W Model 15/18 pair.

The one I really want but haven't found yet is a S&W Model 45,,,
It's a Plain Jane 4" K-frame revolver in .22 LR,,,
An exact match to a S&W Model 10.

The last one I saw auctioned on Gunbroker went for well over 2-Grand,,,
Back around 2005 or so I had a chance to buy one for $850,,,
I hesitated and missed out on the purchase.

They have gone up in collectors value so much,,,
I doubt that I will ever find one I will buy,,,
But I keep looking just in case.

My holy grail revolver is a S&W K-32 or a Model 16 dash 0 through dash 3. These are chambered in 32 S&WL. A 6" barrel would be desired but I'd take a 4" version.

A distant alternate would be am 8-3/8" Model 16-4 (32 H&R Magnum). 32 H&R Magnum has it's uses but it just is not a 32 S&WL. (I do have a 6" Model 16-4)

My Model 30 and Model 31 provide crazy small groups with 32 S&WL. A K-frame 32 S&WL has got to be fabulous.

Trouble is the entire K-frame 32 S&WL production run is only about 3000 units so they are about as rare as hen's teeth. This means prices are crazy high.

A forlorn hope is that S&W will make a run of 32 S&WL k-frame revolvers in their classic line. Oh well.
