I am picking up a new to me Single six tomorrow that was made in 1956. It has the flat gate and from what I understand "XR3" frames.
In looking for new grips there is now a "New XR3" frame from the newest Vaqueros. Will the grips for the "New XR3" fit the old "XR3"?

Also anyone got any suggestions for a cowboy style holster? Everything I am finding is either just plain leather, or way over the top. I would like something in between.

I have a 1956 flat gate SS too. Awesome gun. You will love it!
I can't help you with grip frames but there are lots of options for holsters on Amazon. I picked up a nice one for about $30.00. I know you get what you pay for but for the intended use, a cheap one works in this case.
Welcome to THR!

I think grips for the New Vaquero XR3 grip frame will fit on an older XR3 gun but I believe the hole for the locator pin needs to be relocated because it's in a different spot on the grip.

I found on ebay a really big selection of Ruger grips from Wirthwein Guns in Boonville, Indiana (and no I'm not affiliated with them in any way) and maybe give them a call to see if they can give you a more definite answer on your grips question.

Oh Jesus, Old Model Single Sixes are my kryptonite. Yes, the `56 should have the XR3. It's a dead ringer for the Colt SAA/Navy pattern. The New Model steel XR3 is the same grip pattern, except they moved the locator pin slightly. These can be easily filled with epoxy and redrilled. Then there's a bevel at the inside top edge of the grips. So grips made for the NM can be beveled to fit the old grip frames.

I usually prefer to have them fitted to the frame by a gripmaker. These are by Zane Thompson.

C'mon man, you can't be throwing up pictures like that without any warning. My gun fund is already stretched bursting to the seams as it is. Dang those are nice, and I currently own 0 revolvers.

You got that right!

Very nice

I don't know what I like better, the guns, grips or holsters!

You got some good thing going on there!

Congrats on aquiring that rare Flattop!

There's thousands of discontinued holsters around, and the trick is to decide the holster doesn't have to be new, or currently produced, and you have to invest time and search a bunch of websites.

Or, buy new while spending big bucks. New leather holsters can be very overrated. If there's no known brand in the ad, it's not a good sign.

Hint: Search archived forum posts for 'holster' content that includes the make/ model of your revolver, then go after it (or them) on the used market. This system works.

Sorry folks, but it seems the OP, @yoyoh, is nothing but a scammer. He was at the center of my radar the instant he joined due to a very suspicious IP address used.

Want some proof? Compare the opening post with the one in this old THR thread: https://www.thehighroad.org/index.php?threads/ruger-single-six-questions.827344/
That's an old scammer MO - copy and post the text of a legitimate member to make the scammer look legit. I've seen it dozens of times, but most always it's from an outside forum. I guess this one is really lazy.

I'm not going to lock the thread since some good discussion is taking place, but consider the information unusable by "yoyoh".

I'm too computer dumb to know what this even means. Soldiering on...o_O
He has been added to the known spammer list for this website and any affiliates. This means his email address and ip address are blocked from this site. And the ip address has been (or was already) considered suspicious which will always throw up a notification for the mods if it tries to join the site.

This is how the site i help moderate does it. Been getting quite a few scammers attempt sign up lately. Always be aware!
