Outstanding Rifle!

One of my favorites.



It always puts a smile on people's faces, whether they shoot it or not. 20+ years of ownership and I still haven't asked for a dime from anyone who wants to shoot it.

And, naturally, I can't find photos of either my 03A3 or the Mossberg M44 . . .

Hmm, is a Carbine a "favorite rifle"? Definitely does rank as "fun" though:

It would be really hard to choose just one, and that choice would be subject to change. It could be the 308 that I had built on a 700 action probably 40 years ago as a lightweight walking around hunting rifle. Or the custom 300 WSM built on another 700 action that I bought from my oldest Son. Krieger AMU barrel, McMillan stock, Jewell trigger and a one hole group about ever time it fires a group. On it might be the 308 that I just finished. A 40X stainless action, Krieger fluted varmint contour 20 inch barrel, HS Stock, Jewell Trigger, as of yet unfired. Or the .............??? I said it would be hard to pick just one!

And yeah, I like 700 actions and Krieger barrels! I do have a Stolle Panda when I feel like slumming!

I can't narrow it down to one. Variety is the spice of life. For now, it has to be any one of my Anschutz sporters or my Sako P72.

My favorite rifle is my avatar. Weatherby MarkV ultra lightweight in 7mm Remington Mag. It wears a 3.5 -10 x 40 Leopold.


It is really an all around rifle. It may not be ideal for grizzle bear, but I don't plan on hunting grizzle bears with anything other than binoculars and a camera. It has taken many whitetails and a couple of coyotes. If I ever chase antelope it would work well for that, but then I would give up a chance to buy a new rifle specifically for pronghorns.

My favorite is a Marlin 93 in 38-55 that my Grandpa gave me when I was a little boy, I'll be 80 come this hunting season. It's my favorite because of family history. For general all around hunting my favorite is my old Remington 760 in 30-06. Took my last deer three years ago with Grandpa's old Marlin though.

International Harvester that came back from Korea. Rescued it from a friend that was considering sporterizing it. It cost me $250 with a can of ammo.

My favorite rifle? Hmmm, that would probably be my Anschutz model 1712 silhouette rifle. I have made a couple of small changes and now that rifle fits me very well. It is just a joy to shoot and is reasonable accurate to boot.

So many to choose from. At this time, my phase is with my Uberti 1876 45/75, which is about to go to the Dr. to have a barrel replacement with a 20" barrel in same caliber.

My favorite rifle is my Ruger No. 1-A in 7x57mm Mauser

This is a friend's rifle, I've shot it before, amazingly smooth and makes you look good. The rifle was built by Trent Griswold.

Easy, my Sako A7 30-06 has been putting delicious meat on the family plate for a long time now. 180g Accubond handloads have been stellar, the little meat mulie buck at the bottom was taken with a 130g Barnes at the speed of light and also was outstanding.

Simple Leupold 3-9 CDS in tally rings but I did upgrade the bolt shroud and trigger guard to aluminum.

I only have three longarms, a ruger 96/22 in 22LR, a 223 wby vanguard and a Rossi 92 44 mag stainless 20". The latter will do most of my shooting.

Savage 99F.......250/3000 Pre-mil.

My favorite gun sentimentally would be my dad's 740 Remington 30-06 autoloader. Not exactly a highly regarded weapon but I shot my first deer with it over 40 years ago and it was my dad's so enuf said.

My favorite practical gun would be my Tikka T3X stainless, also in 30-06. Light, smooth, accurate and topped with a Leupold CDS scope which makes it positively lethal. I can confidently carry it anywhere for almost anything.

The Green Meenie. Whenever people tell me those black rifles are weapons of war I show them this one and they just stare, dumbfounded.

I have many but I suppose my very favorite is my 30-06 rolling block that I made from a block of 4140. I made it because too many people told me that a rolling block was a strong action, but not strong enough to handle a high pressure round like a 30-06. It took me seven years to fabricate, an hour here and there after work . I made everything but the barrel, springs, screws and the rear sight. Barrel is from Brownell's, 27" long, 1-10 twist. All springs are coil. In addition to being made from superior steel compared to the originals, every part has been up scaled in size and thickness. The breech block and hammer are only as wide as necessary this allows for shorter action pins ( stiffer ) that are 9/16" . The originals were 7/16". The side walls of the action are thicker than the originals. Everything was professionally heat treated to RC 40. There is a penalty for all that beef; the gun weighs 10 1/.2 pounds. it has a mild recoil for an 06, no surprise there, with that much weight. I rust blued it at home.

The gun ate a German proof round that came in at around 85,000 PSI, if my math was correct. ( Had to convert kilograms per square centimeter to PSI ) I fired the proof round ( remotely ) followed by 10 180 gr. factory rounds. The headspace was unchanged. The empties fall out of the chamber of their own weight. Expansion is less that .001 a quarter inch ahead of the rim. The empties can be full length re-sized with my little finger. So much for "spring" and "stretch" in a rolling block action. Might happen in the originals, not in mine.

I haven't done much range testing, as I can hardly stand up on some days. Back is a train wreck. With the limited shooting I have done it seems to be quite accurate. I can hit a 6 1/2 ounce cat food can at around 75 yards with nearly every shot.

A couple of years back when the Arsenal museum was still open, the Remington Historical Society paid us a visit. Roy Marcot, authority on old west firearms and noted author was with them. He liked my gun. I considered that high praise!

My two favorites. Win 94-30/30 and Henry 44Mag. Got the 30-30 in 1968 for my 14th birthday. Got the Henry for my upcoming 68th birthday. Both are great shooting rifles.

I've kept several over the years, let several get away for one reason or another. If I had to pick one as my favorite, I'd would be my Ruger 77 MK11 in .308 Winchester.

My Sako Finnbear in .270 Win. The most accurate and reliable big game rifle I've owned. It's taken antelope, Mule deer and one elk. A splendid rifle. It now resides at my friends place in S/E Idaho, where Dylan still uses it to hunt.

My HK-91 for almost 40 years now.
