Black rifles are boring

Looks good man! Dunno if I could ever do that to one.

I grew up in Pueblo, looks like you’re not too far away from there.
Lol my '85 bronco spent its first 30 years in Pueblo, owned by the Marck family. They had a sheet metal shop.

The area certainly is quite different than in the mountains... Nowhere to hide!

"Black rifles are boring". Well kimosabe, it's often true, until we go use them.

One can imagine a clone of the H&K G3, FAL etc. Black plastic doesn’t seem to dilute their character. Maybe because the “true HK” rifles (HK-93, MP5 etc) have such plastic. Such a unique family with all-business looks.

Even excluding the extra power, and despite a few unusual ergos, the PTR-91 “grabbed me” much more than an AR platform-although having better the ergos.

My favorite rifle is my FAL. Has been since the first time I shot it. My AR-15 is fun, and way more accurate, as is my AR308, but my FAL is still my favorite. It means a rattle can paint job too. But I need to strip it down and redo it...

So, I took my new AR308, some rattle cans from the hardware store, some pine needles and I fixed my boring looking rifle.

I used sand tan as a base, OD green, flat dark green and red/brown for my colors. Works well here in CO. At least where I live. If I were in the mountains I'd have done a darker base coat. Even managed to camo my hand...
Did you use any chemical to clean all surfaces? I ask because I wanna try this on one of mine... It looks great.

No, I probably should have but it was pretty clean and free of oil. The base coat seems to have adhered well across the different surfaces. No bubbling or tacky spots at all.

sarduy,

Are you trying to trick them, or just live south of Orlando?

The upper two thirds of the state gets some nasty cold spikes and occasionally even a little snow especially in the panhandle. one and a half inches does stop traffic though!

The three things that make a rattle can paint job last longer.
#1 Start with a clear surface.
#2 Let your base coat fully cure.
#3 Use a good quality brand paint.
It also helps if you have a little talent , or lucky.
This is my son’s rifle. These pics were taken about a year after it was painted.

This was the lone survivor mock-up I did.

Definitely use a degreaser. Even on a brand new gun. I use mostly xylene/xylol to clean all my parts before paint, firearms and automotive. Quality lacquer thinner, acetone, and TriSodium Phosphate (TSP) will also all do the job. I also use a red scotchbrite (#7447) pad to scuff it up.

DO NOT use paint thinner/mineral spirits as it will leave an oily film.

I hit it with some matte clear coat to seal it up and painted the mags. Well, one was in the rifle when I painted it. That's the one that's not masked off. I painted the other three mags and now just waiting for them to dry and then they'll get clear coated as well. Now it will shoot 20-50% better than before. That's just science!:rofl:
