Thanks HSO. I spent a lot of time in the school library going over old articles for my research. I also drooled over the prices. Surplus Warner-Swasey prismatic scope and case for $7.50.

Thanks for that fascinating trip down memory lane. That era was my first exposure to gun magazines which I mostly saw only when visiting my two older cousins. Back then I had never seen anything like a high grade Weatherby rifle with that glossy stock finish, the rakish stock profile and all the other decorative touches that Roy used. Along with the fact that I learned you could buy old mil-surp rifles through the mail, as the only way I knew of buying one was off the used rack at a local surplus store and I wasn't old enough to do that.

In ‘60-‘62 I used to order a gun every week or two from Hunters Arms in AlexandriaVA. Never more than $20 or so with shipping. Paid off a lot of tuition and books with them.

I was born 1948 and that magazine looks very familiar. I may have browsed through it at the newstand or even bought a copy.
What a trip down memory lane!
I always wondered about those DEWAT Chauchats.for $19.95
That would have been ten weeks allowance for me in 1960.

Great trip to the past in the Way-Back Machine! Thanks for posting that!

As a youngster growing up in the fifties, there weren't many magazines dedicated to firearms (other than The American Rifleman, of course). Our "sources" for information on guns came mostly from the three major outdoor magazines, Sports Afield, Outdoor Life and Field and Stream. When Shooting Times, Guns, Guns Illustrated and Guns and Ammo came along, I became addicted to them. Accordingly, I have most every issue of most of them dating back to the early sixties stored in my attic. At this point in my life, I'd love to give them to anyone interested in old gun magazines but most people rely on the internet for their information.
