Alliant Powders

There is no more die-hard fan of Unique than me, and I think about buying a can every time I go in. $50 is simply too much.
I’ve never used unique but if I wanted it (or especially if I needed it) $50 wouldn’t slow me down one bit.

Seriously I wouldn’t hesitate. It costs more than that to get a yard mowed around here and if I didn’t enjoy doing it myself, I pay for that too.

Well, let me know if you want the address.

I bought a stupid amount of powder around 16-17 when it returned to the shelves after the Sandy Hook panic. I have an 8lb jug of BE86 I’ve never even opened and really have no plans to ever use. I guess my widow can fertilize the flowers with it when I’m gone.

Wish I had squirreled away a few more primers though. I could have made a small fortune flipping them.

Same, same. I don't really need any more powder, although I'm getting a little close on a few favorites. I stacked some primers, but in anticipation of what I was shooting at the time... not realizing my tastes might change... so I'm not quite fat with LRP's like I am with LPP's, etc. Is what it is.

If you REALLLLLLY loved Unique, you'd have it for your avatar... ;)

I reload to shoot. I only do load development to identify something that shoots well in my guns. Once I have found something that works I pretty much just stick to it. Hence my preference for a particular powder. In my case W231 works great in a number of my guns in different calibers. I am sure other powders would work as well. But as the saying goes if it ain't broke don't fix it. Right now I have 5-6 lbs of it. Should I ever run low right now locally there seems to be a number of Alliant powders available.

Go over to Powder Valley Inc at www.powdervalleyinc.com , I just clicked on" powder" and then
"available" ... six zillion were out of stock but 47 different powders were available .
Didn't look at them all but saw Accurate powders #2 , #5 and #7 they are usefull . Saw some Red Dot ... at least they are showing some powders .
Two weeks ago I bought 300 Starline brass cases from them ... price was regular for Starline , postage was $9.95 but I ordered it late Sunday night and it was in my hands at noon Wednesday .
I spent more in gas the previous Saturday and Sunday driving to 7 different gun & reloading shops finding nothing ... They take your credit card too ... Powder Valley gets 5 Stars in my book.

Stopped by my LGS this morning.
Not really looking for anything.
Thought about another lb of BE-86 but they were out and I wasn't paying $44+tax for 4198.

All in all a decent selection (8# Unique, 2400, Blue Dot, Sport Pistol, Re15 etc) and they finally got rid of their "1 container a day" policy.

I've got, and use, IMR, Hodgdons, Accurate, Alliant, and Ramshot powders. Even some Milsurp powders, along with Holy Black and Fake Black.

Brand loyalty? I have none.

Although, I started with Hodgdons powders, and have more of that than anything.

Wait... Maybe not...
Ditto. I started with Bullseye and Unique because they were the easiest for a novice to work with. Even in 1977 there was 3 generations of loading data out there for those two powders. Later I was told to learn how to load with 2400 if I wanted to get more out of my Blackhawk than hot .38Spl loads. Not long after I was told H110 was where it’s really at in .357Magnum. Etc, etc, and so on. There’s still powders I haven’t got round to. May or may not ever that rountoit. Happy enough either way.
Brand loyalty? Nope. I’m a free market cavalier.

A very unscientific survey of Midway, MidSouth, Brownells, Powder Valley, Everglades, and Natchez seems to indicate Alliant produces powders in batches or runs of specific powders, ships them out, and then moves on to the next specific powder.

I’ve noticed for some time that these retailers will have the same one or two powders available all at the same time. Then, it’ll be a couple others and so on. All I look for are pistol powders.

For example BE-86 is currently available at Midsouth, Brownells, and Powder Valley. Last week I believe a couple others also had BE-86. Only one has Bullseye.

Of course I could also be imagining the whole thing. And why do I keep repeating myself?

Ditto!

There was no 2400 anywhere for a year and a half. But recently all the usual suspects had it.

Brownells just lifted their 2lb limit on each type of powder, that says something. And 2 days after I ordered 2 lbs of 4 different powders.

What I’m have issues finding is 4 lb jugs. I see 1s and 8s, very few 4s.

Mostly for 4lb/5lb jugs I see pistol powders over anything else. Midsouth has quite a few right now, 296, lil gun, AA#2, AA TCM, I guess it depends on what you're looking for whether it's useful or not.

Before this latest shortage were rifle powders more common in half jug quantities?

I’ve always bought my rifle powder in 1 lb jugs because I don’t use that much. Then I started loading for .223/5.56. 4s fit better in my cabinet.

But what I’ve been really trying to find in 4s is shotgun powder. I’m shooting 2,000 grains a day, a couple of days a week. 1s are what I have but they are a joke. For pistol, 1 lb jars are fine.

You’re shooting 2000 grains/day a couple of days/week? Do you have a job or is that your job?:)

Midsouth just notified me RL19, RL22 and Power Pistol is back in stock.

That’s the first time for that in a long time.

I never understood the devotion or brand loyalty to a specific powder?
There are so many brands and powders that are similar if not for all practical use the same

Just move on and buy another powder Especially for Unique and who actually looks for Blue Dot?? (Flaming dirt!)

And don't whine about having to work up new load development. It's not that hard. Unless you a super secret bench rest load.:)

Didn't we used to have a member here from "Team Alliant"??

Hi...
I use a lot of different powders for handgun and rifle reloading but I do have a few favorites that I use for bulk loading of general purpose/target shooting. Among them are Unique and Blue Dot. I use Unique for mid range (powerwise) loads in straight wall revolver cartridges like .44Spl, .41Magnum, .44Magnum and .45Colt. I buy Unique in 8# jugs for those applications. I use Blue Dot for mid range (powerwise) loads in .357Magnum using 158gr LSWC because it has always provided consistent accuracy in quite a few different revolvers.
I use 2400 in straight wall handgun cartridges for full power loads most of the time but I do use H110/W296 at times but I am a bit leery of it's small window of charge weights, but it does seem to provide the highest velocities and highest decibel readings in my .41Magnum and .44Magnum revolvers.
I always keep a few hundred rounds of 125 gr Hornady HP/XTPs with near maximum charges of H110/W296 in .357Magnum loaded up for when the handgun range starts to get crowded at the gun club. A couple cylinders of those fired tends to make the crowd thin out fairly quickly. So yeah...H110/W296 does have its uses.

I'd love a pound of that blue dot and either a few singles or an 8er of that #15

If you're coming this way, bring a pound of something to trade.

I've got a pound of Blue Dot sitting on the shelf. Been there about 10 years. I'm not going to use it.
Honestly it's to gain experience with every powder I can get my hands on. The next time I drive to my mom's I'll try and swing in. Did you have a bad experience with it?

I didn't have a bad experience with it. I didn't have any experience with it at all. This pound is unopened.

I've never used the powder. I snagged it as trade bait back during a previous regime when powder was non-existent; figured I could use it to benefit myself and the other party in the hypothetical trade.

That trade just never developed, for whatever reasons. Either the other party had nothing I wanted, or tried to pay cash. In times of shortages, sometimes cash isn't king - if there is nothing to buy then a trade is the way to go.

I have plenty of other powder choices, in kegs. I'm not going to bother finding loads for a powder I will likely not keep in stock.
