Caliber War Thread

OK... So you say "Most of my SD handguns are chambered in 38 special because I grew up with 38"... Kids learn EVERYTHING from those who were around in their formative years... That's exactly why my kids have grown up shooting my 45acp and 10mm... They'll naturally gravitate to the most extreme lung blown otta your body calibers ever dreamed up by mankind!!! And of course since their dad handloads... the 3 P's are not price, price and price but power, power and power

Is it too late for me to start shooting the .400 Corbon in my 1911s? Does anyone still do that? It would be the only handgun chambering besides .45 ACP and 9mm I would be interested in at this time.
Uh can you just get dies and re size 45acp brass or no? Cause from what I understand it's a 45acp case necked down to 40 cal much the same way 357sig is a 40sw case necked down to 35cal?

Where’s the love for the 7.62 Nagant? A revolver round that can be suppressed. Plus it goes well with an over-the-top mustache and total disdain for the peasants. I’m sure it could stop any Bolshevik revolts in their tracks!

Thanks. Even better, Starline has the Corbon brass readily available. Looks like barrels are readily available. I was just wondering if anyone is still shooting the Corbon or if its time has passed. My shooting partner, who does most of our reloading, is not greatly interested in a 10mm 1911, but seemed interested when I broached the idea of the Corbon.

Why would anyone choose to shoot the 9mm punybellum while the all american 38 Super exists?

Not only that but with the .38 Super you can easily convert it to shoot 9mm. ammo by simply adding a 9mm. barrel and magazines to the mix! Use the cheaper 9mm. to practice with and save the .38 Super ammo for when it counts!

Got a LE turn-in Glock Model 22 in 40 caliber back when they were $300 or w/e.

Paid $99 for a 9mm conversion barrel and $25 for a 9mm mag, so now it's also a G17 whenever anyone wants to spend a whole minute swapping out the barrels and mags.

So I'm out like $425 and it was a total waste of money. 40 caliber is so wannabe. 9mm is so outdated. Glocks are so cliche. The name makes a sound effect. Really, I'm supposed to like this plastic brick that is an onomatopoeia?

But wait, I haven't even properly slammed a caliber yet.

For another $99 I could have gotten a conversion barrel in the caliber 357sig.

Yes, 357sig is a caliber, not a typo. It's an extinct cartridge that was popular for a few months in the 1990's or something.

The caliber is so uninteresting that I can't be bothered to spend $99 to try it out.

I'm not saying the ammunition is rare and hard to find, I'm just saying that if you do find some, Sasquatch is probably carrying it in his pocket. :)

I'm kind of partial to .357sig.
Local availability isn't really a problem, the farm and home store just down the road has a good number of boxes, affordability it is another matter entirely.

My only interest in the punybellum was the cheap ammo price's when I was too lazy to reload. Nowadays that ship has sailed so reloading the Super works for me. I cringe at the thought of using my small pistol primers on the punybellum. :barf:

Hey Sasquatch, have any extra 45acp????

I have never had a 357sig or 10mm they are on the want list!

:D No .45acp ammo here anymore.

I sold it all a year or two ago along with my Sig STX 1911. That was my last 45. I gave away my dies and brass too.

Interesting thread. Lately it seems I have been shooting .22LR more than anything else. I've been using a few old Marlin rifles & a Buckmark Camper to do this. .22 is fun to shoot, low recoil, not particularly loud & inexpensive to shoot. I enjoy playing with it. It works well to start new shooters.

Growing up I only knew of 2 people in my family having handguns. My father had an Iver Johnson snubnosed .38 my grandmother had given him. One of my uncles had a 1911. I really wasn't exposed to handguns much.
I am probably a lightweight but I have owned handguns chambered for 9mm Largo, 9mm Luger, .40 S&W, .38 Special, .357 Magnum, & .45 ACP.

I never had any interest in .25 or .32. I wouldn't carry .22 LR for defense just because I've seen, had too many duds.
I think 9mm is okay but I like .40 better.
I haven't looked in a while but .38 & .357 factory ammunition was more expensive than 9mm or .40. I don't reload so this matters to me. I only own one revolver but I like it. I tend to shoot autos more because that is what I carry.
I very seldom carry the .45 ACP 1911 because of its size & bulk. I don't shoot it as often as 9mm or .40 because it is more expensive & I am more likely to carry one of them.
I have been interested in .357 Sig but I just don't think the pay off would be worth the cost of me getting set up for it, buying ammo, etc.
I think 10mm is cool but I don't have a need for it right now.
It would appear .40 S&W is my favorite handgun caliber.
If I were spending time in the woods around here & wanted something more powerful I would carry my old .357 because I'm too cheap to go out & buy a 10mm just for that.

I like the .41 because what you see is what you get... unlike the .44, which, as we all know, is the Wizard of Oz hiding behind it's .429" curtain... and I hate false advertising. Everyone knows the .41 is more powerful and flater shooting than the .44, recoils less, because of all that extra weight on the cylinder and barrel, and kills everything deader than dead. I've seen a .41 bullet split in 4 pieces and hit 4 separate targets in the bullseye... THAT's how good a .41 is. ;)

Meh... I get kind of bored with some things... I'm completely out of the .38/.357 business, primarily because I like shooting autos more than revolvers. I only have 4 revolvers left... 3 .41's and a .45 Colt. I was out of the 9mm business for many years... sold all my components, dies, everything... but now that I carry, I'm back with the 9mm, and had to go out and buy everything, again. It is what it is.

I've only owned 1 .44SPC... it was not the pot 'o gold at the rainbow's end some make it out to be. It does nothing better than my .41's or .45 Colt won't do, although I'll admit the pistol... a Ruger .44 flattop... was a right handy pistol. I miss the pistol, but not the Ruger part. Never owned a .44MAG, likely never will.

I also won't ever own a .40 S&W, although the 10mm really intrigues me. Maybe someday, maybe not.

I guess every cartridge intrigues me in some way... I like shooting different firearms. Some turn out great, others are colossal failures, at least for me... but they are all interesting.

I'm comfortable with anything from .38 Special to .357 Magnum to .40 S&W to .44 Magnum through .45 ACP. While capacity might be a concern in certain situations, my ability to hit with a quality revolver or pistol in these calibers is something I'm pretty confident about. Thus, I can't really indulge in the whole "caliber war" thing.

I have a caliber/cartridge problem I like them! all!!! I just like some better than others...

Revolver cartridges versus Auto cartridges.
Auto loaders have a capacity advantage and quicker reload capabilities can't argue that!
Revolvers have the versatile advantage! 357 can shoot 38s. 44mag/44 special, 454/45. If it fits in the holes it will go bang everytime.
Auto loaders hot loads needs this recoil spring. Light loads needs that spring...
Shoot a 8 shot 357 and alternate 38s and 357+p it goes bang.

Next purchase (I'm thinking S&W 69) will be a 44mag.
After that a micro 9mm or short 9mm?
Maybe a 10mm??

I like 45acp.

I like 9mm

But I carry 38+P

And that's because my EDC is a S&W 642. Almost perfect for my situation.

Debates about this caliber vs that caliber for self defense are all well and good but for jack rabbits the 30 Luger is king. I've seen jacks hit with 30-06, 270, 357 Mag, 455 Webley, 45 Colt, 9 mm, etc. and keep going. Only the 30 Luger stopped them every time. On the other hand a 22LR will nail a cotton tail every time.
