I have five revolvers and am thinking I "need" more. I am wishing I had not passed up on that H&R top-break, 9-shot .22 that was at my LGS a couple months ago. It is gone and it was/is sweet.

Maybe a .22 is the way to go, cheap ammo, lots of time at range for low cost, but I still like the big booms too.

I also see that Charter Arms has a .380 revolver that does not require moon clips. I might go for a non-revolver ammo if moon clips are not required, but what caliber.

Top break would certainly help round out my collection. I probably should look for longer barrels too. Maybe Heritage 16" barreled .22! There is a guy in Canada does gun videos and has a 10&5/8" barreled .44 Magnum. That is pretty cool too.

I also thought about another S&W J-frame .38 in black (maybe a 442) so I can shoot the current EDC a ton more (500 rounds through it now), wear it out, and keep the newer one for EDC.

I generally say that a good .22 is an absolute necessity. I still more-or-less believe that, but ammunition availability has put a big dent in my enthusiasm - and assuming you reload, that Model 31 is about as good a target and plinking revolver as was ever made. (I am jealous!)

For my money, your collection is missing a really high quality big bore. I'd be looking into a S&W Model 29 or similar.

Model 25 perhaps!

Wow. I think the 22 revolver, the 45 ACP revolver (Model 25), and the Schofield are all fine suggestions. I don't have a Schofield, so I can't recommend it from first hand knowledge, but I'd like one. It's just the $1,000-plus price tag that stops me (that, and my aging eyes). But I can say 22 and 45 ACP revolvers are both fine things to have. And the 22's are cheap to shoot, relatively speaking.

I would suggest an H&R 999, but that's just a personal preference - they are long out of production, and the trigger pulls are pretty heavy, generally. And the sight are not very convenient to adjust. An S&W Kit Gun is much better, but the prices on those have gone to the moon, I guess. Maybe a Ruger LCR in 22?

Considering what you already have, I vote for a 4” to 8” DA/SA revolver in .22 LR. Like a K frame S&W of some sort, if you don’t mind spending the money.
S&W Model 617 is 10 round K-frame .22 LR with 4-inch barrel! Of course the Model 17 has the classic look but is only 6-shots. My LGS has a .22 J-frame in 8-shot.

I love mine. Question is; do you reload your own ammo? If not, you may want to rethink that one.
I get my .45 Colt range ammo for $44 a box of 50 in either 180 grain or 250 grain both poly coated LRN cowboy loads.

If I am going to spend a LOT of time at the range, then a .22 is definitely in order.

1) A 22lr revolver of some sort. The OP seems to like nice S&W revolvers. I shoot my medium-framed K22 more than any other firearm.

2) If not a 22, a 45acp. That Virginian is nice, but the ammo is expensive. 45acp is the cheapest and easiest to find of the larger-bore calibers. If the OP likes the nice S&W N-frames, my 625 is the bee's knees, and I shoot it often. I also like my Ruger Blackhawk 45colt/45acp "convertible".

Ruger single six or a wrangler. Seriously the most fun you can have at the range: soft recoil, soft report, and soft on ammo price. They handle like a 75% scale model of that Virginia Dragoon. Ive got a dragoon myself, a 1981 stainless 8" in 44Mag.
I like this 624. Two things I don't have .22 caliber and a very long barrel! But the Wranglers are much lower price, just no long barrel.

My LGS has had a couple 22 revolvers sitting around for a while. Barrels probably in the 4-6 inch range. I'll have to take another look next time I stop in. One is a converted black powder revolver that now shoots 22s or something like that. Looks strange with this big hinged rod or bracket on the bottom of the barrel.

Stop in and check em out. The hinged rod is called a loading lever and it was used to press a bullet/ball in from the front of the cylinder on black powder revolvers. I would shy away from a conversion like that, most likely.

Most LGSs can order anything in their distributors catalog for you. I ordered a Cimarron 45Colt from mine. Took about a week.

Good idea, I can ask what they can order. I think they once said that instead of calling and saying they want a particular gun, they would ask what guns are available. Kick, kick, for passing up the .22 H&R 9-shot top break.
