What's the most that you overpaid for ammo/components?

my LGS was rationing 9mm by the 10 round sandwich bag. @ $10 a bag and was still selling out with lines wrapped around

1 bag per person a day
You just reminded me of something, and I think this one will take the cake.

I was with a friend at a pawn shop when he was picking up his new rifle, about a year ago now. I witnessed some gentlemen walk in and ask for some 9mm. Kid behind the counter says "Sure, we've got some" and hands him a dimebag with 25 rounds of FMJ in it. One of the guys asks "How much" and the kid responds "Forty bucks." Guy thought about it for a second and goes "Alright", buys it, and leaves.

As soon as the gentlemen clear the door my buddy and I respectfully tell the kid to inform his boss that if we'd have known that they were pricing their ammo like that, we wouldn't have given them any of our business. We, of course, know that it was the owner who set the prices, not a 17 year old making minimum wage, so we didn't give him a hard time.

They can price their merchandise however they'd like, but we certainly won't be patronizing their store any longer.

Surprisingly, the rifle was actually a decent deal.

lots of greed during those times. I remember Midways was one of the worst!!! IMI 5.56 / 1K for $1300! I only buy stuff from them on sale

Is it really overpaying if you are paying the going market rate?

I bought some small pistol primers earlier this year for close to $100 per 1000... That's the worst I've had to do and still able to shoot about 8,000 rounds per year.

I think it depends on the specifics. If 9mm and .556 permanently stayed at a buck a round, then paying a buck a round isn't overpaying.

Now, if 9mm and .556 was a buck a round due to a widespread freakout and then reduced to what we are currently seeing now, then yes, I would say that it would be overpaying.

I've run across a thread here or there where people have stated that they've paid ridiculous sums of money for ammo over the past few years.

Probably the worst was a guy who paid $80 for a box of 30-30 and was apparently glad to have it. I audibly gasped when I read how much he paid. I was somewhat blindsided by the shortage, but I was certainly in good enough shape to not have to pay five times the price for a box of hunting ammo.

I bought a couple boxes of Winchester Power-Points in .308 for $25 a box around the end of 2020. I believe they were going for $18-$20 pre-pandemic. Considering they cost about $30 a box nowadays I don't think I did too badly.

I also paid $6 each for 50 round boxes of CCI Standard when rimfire was non-existent. Not a whole lot of money total, but still nearly double what it used to be. I only bought a few so it didn't sting that badly.

Edited to clarify title and to add reloading components to the question.
I remember walking into Walmart in august of 2020 and buying 270 Winchester ammo for $16.79 a box!

What's the most that you overpaid. . .

When you've defined "overpaid", without reference to any nonsensical claims to a right to set the price of things you don't own, I'd be happy to consider the question.

You can't. Same as "price gouging", the concept vanishes as soon as you thoroughly apply property rights, including the right to sell one's property, to the conversation.

See, I understand that in a free market any object can be sold to who ever is willing to pay the most for it. Unfortunately this ends up being pushed wayyy to far and you see people asking $350 with shipping a single brick of large rifle magnum primers on GunBroker (Yes I have seen actual listings for that much, sadly). Yeah sure, maybe one sucker will pay that much but people like us here on THR will see right through their BS and refuse to pay that much.

I hate to admit it, but I paid $449.00 plus $30.00 shipping for a 1000 rounds of S&B 9mm fmj right before things got really stupid. Not too long after I gifted a 9mm Shield and 200 of them to my brother who lives in Seattle, he didn't own a handgun. I'm keeping the rest and will never shoot them unless CW2 breaks out as a reminder to prepare more efficiently.

I bought some 450 Marlin from Buffalo bore that was around $120 a box if memory serves, that was their normal price but it was still an overpayment imo.

I also decided to scope and use a old 270 if had for years in the middle of the shortage and paid nearly $100 for 2 boxes, shipped as I couldn’t find any locally.

Luckily, I'm flush with all my reloading components except for LRP's; I never needed them until I decided to start loading for 7.62x39, .308 and .30-30.

So I broke down and paid $11/100 for CCI 200's and 250's.

Last time I bought primers I paid $13-20/1000! (but I bought 80,000 and still have a comfortable amount)

Worst I paid was about $100 after shipping for a 1k box of small rifle primers. Almost made me sick doing it, considering a few (10ish) years ago I bought wolf brand for $16.50 per 1k, and was hemming and hawing about it wondering if I could find them cheaper.... If I had only known...

The most I've spent was $27.99 + tax for a 10 round box of 10 Gauge #4 turkey loads (x2) because those are almost non-existent.

I have to admit that I seriously considered selling some of my .444 Marlin last fall when boxes were selling for $100-125 each on GB.
