Second favorite battle or assault rifle after the AR15 or AK47?

Well this came up in real life recently in Southern Oregon. A group of neighbors and extended family came under the ire of large Mexican Cartel growers of MJ in our area as our good sheriff dept is rolling up HUGE , as in hundred of thousand plants , grown along Cartel bought up for cash river edge properties . All the neighbors can't stand it as the State and feds give them a pass to bus in hundreds of illegal laborers and the local small un incorporated towns are fearful of the swaggering young "enforcers" that patrol "their " turf. It IS real scary. The only thing that stands against them is the Josephine County Sheriff Office , a Great organization, and they will bull doze and round up "managers" of the unregistered grows they are tipped off to. So several huge operations, with hundred workers living in barns have been flattened by the sheriff dept this year. Verbal threats are being made to citizens by the young enforcers who were caught and released as there is no immigration enforcement.
To that end my extended family of legal CCW posessors who are in volunteer fire and other emergency services are gearing up. So out from the back of the safes come the FNFALs, the M-14s and other major caliber weapons by the over 40 crowd , under advice from "ya better call Gordon" as the new tool against foriegn invasion. Seems the modis operendi of the cartel growers is to put four heavily armed enforcers in their 4x4 SUVs and approach your properties and get as close as they can to dwellings before disembarking into concealed positions. They have done so a couple times but use of direct UHF contact to Sheriffs have resulted inapprehension before the firefight starts !
However for such tactics on a sconce , the 7.62 in a bipod equipped FNFAL, or M14 , AR 10 7.62x51 seems to be optimum from an alerted dwelling which should have monitored cameras or guard on duty. Yes it IS that bad currently ! Yes and a Garand with a can of M1 or M2 AP on strippers would work too .
5.56 doesn't do so great on SUVs in my experience, where as 7.62x51 (or 7.62x54R) does the job.
Just saying.
Obviously for fire and maneuver fighting 5.56 or 7.62x39 is just fine.
I'm trying to help here and don't want to argue about what I am currently very concerned about on a daily basis.

Do you like the FNC? My friend had one and it ate firing pins all the time. His dad finally made one for him out of titanium.

I think there were a couple other issues, would have to ask. He sold it after the firing pin upgrade.

For most of what I would use a battle rifle for in an actual wartime scenario; the M1A Scout Squad.

For most of what I would use a battle rifle for in a home defense situation: the M1 carbine with Speer Gold Dot rounds. ( I know the M1 carbine was not intended as a “battle rifle” per se, but it was used in an awful lot of battles.)

Stay safe.

Since you gave me an out, I’ll say it’s definitely the Steyr AUG. It’s got all the right stuff for a rifle that needs to be carried all day.

Why is that a way out? Because it’s actually my favorite. The M-16 is my second favorite, and I carried one for a while.

Everybody’s said the M1 Carbine was issued to WW2 troops in tight quarters, but my grandpa, a radio repaiman for trucks and bombers was issued a Tommy Gun.

M1 carbine would probably take third place for me. I think .30 Carbine is enough medicine to put a man down out to 150 yards or so.

I'm with you brother, from a neighbor.

For me that’s question is easy; SiG 55X
The only reason it isn’t #1 is weight.

After that it would be a toss up between the CZ Bren 805 and HK53.

If you’re talking about 6.5, 308, 7.5 etc. …AR 10 in 6.5 Creedmoor or 308 if it’s permitted.
I know there’s a lot of love for the M14 & FAL but they don’t fit me well so probably the HK91 … or maybe the Scar (I’ve never handled one)

Probably any rifle made for that role which you can trust (?), and I’m certainly no combat veteran.

To repeat a comment I made weeks after the Russians invaded Ukraine, which rifles have the Ukrainians been able to depend on ?

Does their typical AK-74 (or 47) prove reliable and have the required accuracy for the distances encountered?

With guns constantly visible on store rooftops due to Zero 911 response, (who says it would Not work on a house...ie post-Katrina) the South Central LA Race Rioters seemed never to approach close enough to check the guns' pedigrees.

Apparently these "battle rifles" (wink) were enough deterrence because there were always a few and were quite visible.

Food for thought. Woops.... I've strayed again from academics to the Real World.....

Served overseas as a Tank Gunner in an M60A1. 66-72 of all the multiple personal weapons handed me. I remained partial to the good ol' M14. We kept them in our Bustle Rack in case we had to walk out, a grease gun (though loved) just wouldn't do.

VZ58 or SKS.
Although I have four AKs and only one VZ, the VZ really outshines the AKs in a lot of areas, and surplus mags are still reasonable. VERY good accuracy.
SKS is inexpensive and reliable, crude, and a mediocre trigger unmodified. But I’ve owned two Norincos, a mid 90s pinned barrel and a late 80’s threaded barrel, and both are good shooters.
I’d also nominate a PTR, I had a PTR-32 and really liked it, the recoil management is amazing. But it didn’t run with all my surplus mags and only Magpuls and Tapcos ran 100%. It’s a better platform in the original .308. But a heavy rifle at 10 lbs and most of that weight is the barrel so not a fun gun to tote around.
