I had this... whatever it is... given to me years ago. I was told that it is for a .58 caliber rifle musket. It isn't a Minie ball and it doesn't really look like a normal bullet at all. The front part is lead and the base appears to be aluminum. Nothing sticks to a magnet. Any ideas?

The cap tin ( actually brass) appears to be pretty old. Anybody recognize this..? Do the letters "UCC" ring any bells? It doesn't look large enough to hold 250 of anything. It is about 1 1/2" in diameter.

Just curious. Thanks for any help.

UCC = Union Cartridge Co., precursor of Remington arms. It's old, probably has collector value.

In the back of my mind, I've seen something like this before....maybe I'm thinking of some modern BP loads with powder attch to bullet.

It's too small for pulling incrememts for a morter.

I've never seen a bullet like that. The base may be a zinc scraper. It's not for a rifled musket tho. The primer tin held centerfire primers made by the Union Cap & Chemical Co. in the early 1900's. No.2 primers were for black powder. Smokeless primers were designated no. 2 1/2.

What's the difference between a black powder primer, and a smokeless one?

Marketing hype mostly, have used both types of primers reloading black powder and smokeless, didn't notice any difference, shells went bang, stuff came outta the barrel, bird went down.

Do they still make No.2 primers? I know Remington makes No. 2 1/2.

That would force the base of the bullet to obturate. It looks like a mini ball. Interesting, I've never seen one either.

Even more interesting, no lube grooves. Clear coated bullet?
