What are you doing NOW to be ready for the upcoming hunting season?

Been working hard, struggling with knee and shoulder pain. Some days just walking is a chore, I know it's bad when I can't keep up with my wife. Anyway I've been doing load work with several powders for 7mm08 and a new caliber 6.5x55 sweede as well as 223/5.56 been teal busy at the reloading bench. Usually do a lot of walking through the woods during deer season, this year might be day to day as far as walking is concerned.

I had my crossbow restrung last year at a Bow shop. It has not shot the same since. Before it was a tack driver out to 50 yds. After the new string job, the arrows have up to a 6 inch spread. If I can't correct this and I really do know NUTHUN about the bow, I may as well send it back to the manufacturer and see what they can do.
I'd take it back to who strung it to see if they didn't do something to make it shoot poorly.
Perhaps taking it apart and restringng it again could solve the issue.

This is kind of a stretch for this thread but I have to varmint hunt all the time but I don’t always win and have to account for the losses, on a continuing basis.

Kind of surprised when I went to turn the eggs day 16 and this little one was already out. Generally they are like clock work on the 21day after beginning incubation. I don’t even stop turning them until they’ve been in 17 days.

Okay….

Yeah I’d say this post is a “bit” of a stretch/massive thread drift.

Amongst the family we have 1 elk tag, 1 bear tag, and 3 deer tags. Bear starts next week. We hike, bike and do some weight training year round. Everybody is in good shape. Our back country equipment is maintained and provisioned. The rifles were taken out last week, zero and dope was verified out to 600 yards. My daughter shoots a Steyr Scout in 6.5 CM. Yesterday she took it out and shot a .75”, 5 shot group at 100 yards then proceeded to put 3 rounds inside of 3” at 500 yards. I have been playing with my M71 Winchester in .348. I have the desire to kill my elk with it this year. With its factory iron sights I’ve been shooting about a 3” group at 100 yards, 6” or so at 200 yards and can keep them in an elk kill zone at 300. My limitation would be a max 200 yard shot and preferably closer. That old lever gun wants to be a bench rest rifle when it grows up. I’m shocked at how tight that rifle groups.

My older daughter is as lean and hard as I ever seen her and has been doing some kind of HIIT training everyday for the last year. She’s got 6 pack abs and veins popping out on her arms. In a senseless act of self preservation I’m just walking out the door to do a 12 mile Mt Bike ride with the false hope of beating back age and morbid decay.

We are ready to go.

My only concern is being able to keep up with the girls this year.
Man after my own heart with using that 71. You shooting factory or reloads? Good luck with the elk and keeping up with your daughter. Getting g older ain't for wusses.

Sitting in my recliner watching Curt Gowdy wrestle a lion while Ule Gibbons eats wild hickory nuts on the commercials. If you know what i am talking about, you know I am too old to go chase deer anymore. I shoot paper targets now as they are easier to clean...up. Give me a "like" if you recognize these men's names.

I'm using hand loads, Win brass and Barnes original 250 Gr soft points behind a load of H380.
That will definitely get the job done. I have an affinity for the 35 caliber myself. They really don’t require premium bullets to get the job done as cup and core work just fine. Good luck on your upcoming hunt.

Done a bit of scouting. Got some handloads ready for the new rifle.(test them on the long weekend next week) Sorted out clothing/gear and am going to store it by “temp range”; last year that was 70 the first day, and -15 or something like that the last… so… all the layers have their place… got all tags ready except muzzleloader. And… I’m gonna have to invest in a pair of hunting boots

What no Marlin Perkins Mutual of Omaha? The whole family would gather to watch those shows.

Gotta ask what cartridge? 7x57?
I have 4 rifles I may rotate out this season, depends were I hunt and the weather.my ruger 77 7x57 usually gets opening day, I can use that gun anywhere or any weather. Others are my m18 mauser 6.5 prc, good for farther shots and don't mind it getting wet to much. My Browning A-bolt ii 7wsm again will reach out so don't use it much for short range stuff unless bear seem to be around. He for nice days with shorter shots or brush my cz 527 7.62x39 carbine.

If I get some meat in the freezer then I'll play with some other rifles, fun to get the old mausers out.

Got my ATV up North yesterday.
Saw a Timberdawg. Big ole gray wolf.
As daniel craig said, life's priorities are getting in the way.

Believe it or not, I made two meals for Marlin Perkins back in the early seventies.
Boy, he was a picky eater. (Age related, I think)

I'll go back to camp and talk about Liberty Mutual.

I thought it was Mutual of Omaha as 9X56MS pointed out.
