The Gen 5 Glock in .40 S&W has been out for a while now, but I’ve never shot one. I’d like to hear from anyone who has shot either a G23 or G22 Gen 5, especially if they can compare it to the Gen 3/4 models.

The Gen 5s have a slightly wider slide with more mass that supposedly tames recoil a bit. The G22 is about 3 ounces heavier and the G23 about 2 ounces heavier than their earlier version.

Thanks!

Have you shot a gen5 in 9mm? I had a gen5 19 and liked it way less than any of my gen4s. Apparently I’m a fan of the finger grooves in the grip and the gen 5 feels less secure and almost slick. Maybe just me but something to consider.

The slide width of my gen4 G37 is almost annoying to me. The balance is not as good as a gen4 17 or 22.

Put it all together and I know I won’t like the G22 gen5. Maybe I’m just a grip and balance snob. :D (But I’m not a trigger snob because they’re all stock Glock)

I have a few G19’s and my carry is a Gen 5 MOS. I like my Gen 4’s a LOT and the finish is way better on the Gen 4, but the Gen 5 shoots great too.

Regarding the .40’s, I’d heard the added mass to the slide de made a big difference. I have a G23-4 that I have shot a lot, but less recoil would be welcome. Thinking a G22 MOS would be a great option.

thanks for the inputs…

I would like to know if a Gen 5 .40 slide fits on a corresponding 9mm frame. I am currently in CA and have a couple Gen 5 9mm's. I would love to be able to get a .40 upper and just throw it on an existing frame.

I really like the Gen 5 Glocks and keep everything stock. They are accurate and the BFN helps with ejection. I am curious to hear what folks think about the .40.

I will say the actual trigger shoes on my Gen 5 Glock 19X and 45 are much more comfy on my trigger finger than the other generation triggers have been. I’ve swapped all the others out for flat triggers (Apex or Viking Tactics).

The frame of the 19X has that lip on the front of the grip that is a bit funky, the 45 doesn’t have it (I doubt the other Gen 5 do either).

I don’t have a Gen 5 .40 or I would measure the slides to see what the differences are for you. :(

Stay safe.

Thanks. The dimensions are available on Glock USA. The difference between a Gen 4 and Gen 5 Glock 22 is only in the slide width and overall weight.

What I want to know is simply “is this a softer shooting gun?”

I thought I’d heard it was due to the extra weight, which makes sense. Just looking to see if anyone has first hand experience they can compare from.

I wonder if a heavier slide rocking back under recoil would create more of a top-heavy/whippy feeling when fired, especially when the mag gets low and the center of mass moves upwards. My 17L certainly feels like it has a lot of rocking in my grasp with that long slide moving around.

I really have no idea, just wondering…

Stay safe.

The Gen 5 Glock 22 was my duty gun before we went to the 9mm. It was awesome, softer shooting than any other Gen of .40 with a good trigger as well. I’d trade in my 9 to get it back if they’d let me.

I believe the improved recoil spring contributes to the lower recoil as well. It honestly feels like shooting a 9 and allows for very fast follow up shots.

Thanks! This is what I was hoping to hear.

I’m thinking hard on getting a G22 or G23 MOS. Currently only have a G23 Gen 4 that I do love but I want an MOS model.

G23 is the sweet spot for size, big enough for duty use but can be carried concealed.

I’ve not shot a Gen 5 23 but would assume they have all the same upgrades.

I have Glock 22.3, 17.5 and 22.5 so I can offer my comparison perspective.
The thicker heavier slide of the 22.5 is what Glock should have done with 40 from the start.
The 22.5 is notably softer shooting than the 22.3 and going from the 17.5 to the 22.5 there is subjectively little to no difference in recoil.
Pics of 17.5 and 22.5 - the slide on the 22.5 is more like the thickness of a 21/30 while keeping the same grip as the 17
I prefer the gen 5 guns over prior generations.

And a 17 or 22 is easy to conceal AIWB in the FL heat with a loose untucked shirt and holster with claw that pushes grip toward body.

Thanks!

I do have a couple full size Glocks, a 21 and a 17 (both Gen 4’s), but I generally prefer the compact size (19/23) for most carry tasks.

I am not much of an AIWB guy…never could get past the muzzle pointing at key arteries or other body parts…

Does the Gen 5 fit Gen 3 holsters?

The Gen 5 .40s do shoot softer. I wouldn't call it significant, but it was noticeable. I dont have one but my best friend is a big 40 shooter. The only issue he has had with the Gen 5 model 22 has been finding holsters. I'll have to let him know about what CDW4ME said about the 20/21 holsters working.

...about the 20/21 holsters working.
Or holsters for the GAP guns G37/G38/G39.

I'd think the Gen 5 .40 S&W guns have been out long enough that most holster makers probably produce a holster for them.

If you already have a holster for a G20/G21 (or less likely G37/G38/G39) you could use those, but otherwise, I'd just get a holster for a Gen5 .40 S&W.

Have you tried to swap slides and frames on the 17.5 and 22.5?

I have a 17.5 and would like to buy a 22.5 upper. I am guessing this would fit as I do the same thing with my 17.3 and 31.3.

Not trying to be a pain, but you are first person I have come across that has both guns.

Yes I have had all three Gen5 .40's, kept the G27 and G22. They shoot great, definitely better than previous generations and very accurate I might add. Recoil is less because the slide is a bit thicker, not as thick as the .45/10mm models but thicker than they used to be. I have also shot Gen5 9mm next to Gen5 .40 and recoil was nearly the same, they're soft shooting .40's. Great guns!
