Just being alone in the mountains. I scouted/camped for a week a couple of weeks ago, and it was really good for the soul. I don't have a Hotel Hilton like the Farmer, or a mansion in the sky like Jmorris (only in Texas...right?) but I like to find me a good spot where I can watch the trail, cook up some coffee on my little stove, eat and chill. I may even smoke a cigar, or my pipe-hawk. Later in the day I may stop again and cook a hot afternoon lunch. And I always carry a super lightweight high-tech ten-foot tarp, (weighs less than my pancho) so I can have a roof over my head if I need it.
Yep just being there is what I look forward to most. Been busy these last few days making sure everything is sighted in, and changing up my field gear a bit.
Also, been hunting with ML's for years, but this year I'm committed to, or weening myself off a modern side arm. I like to pack a cap and ball pistol, sometimes/often I do, but sometimes take a .22LR or my EL Patron/.45 Colt, or my Luger of all things. This year it will be all Colt Model 1862, or my Plains Pistol. Shot the Plains Pistol today, and dang that thing sure goes bang with a heavy load, and laser accurate besides. So I'm looking forward to that. Adds some spice to the adventure.
Yeah, hunting camp, I miss that, all my partners are dead from agent orange, busted up their backs from jumping out of perfectly good airplanes and now can't move too well anymore, or traded hunting for the beer bottle. (I'm not a non-drinker, and I like good whiskey, but I won't give up hunting, sailing, kayaking and motorcycling for it) And my son is too busy being First Sergeant in the Army, So now I'm "Lone Wadi" when it comes to hunting. But the solitude is nice too, and I look forward to that. I ain't complaining.
