Ruger SFAR Drop

I'm a huge fan of 30-06, so don't take this wrong, but the 308 isn't weaker than WW 2 30-06. It's a duplicate in performance. Knocking 3 lbs off the weight of a battle rifle is a great thing, and I want one. I want a garand too, no matter how much it weighs!

Get a CMP adjustable gas block for the M1! Then load that bad boy with full house ‘06 and its a whitetail’s worst enemy.

Don’t get me wrong I’m not whining about .308, I’m just musing that an AR pattern rifle is already a bit lighter than, say, a Garand or M1A, at least by original concept. I don’t think it’ll be unpleasant by any means. I guess I’m hoping it’ll bring all the AR modularity, accuracy, ease of optic mounting to the table, while feeling a little smaller than the existing AR-10s. And theoretically, that’s exactly what it should be.

Nice, I saw one on GB from a place in Tennessee I believe, was just wondering if you bought it local or sight unseen.

Nice, are you going to chop it down or leave it 20"? I'd be interested to see a thread with your thoughts and some pics when you get a chance to put it through it's paces.

I have a 16" Ruger SR-762 (the gas piston series they did for a while), an 18" PSA, and now this 20" ruger. I want to keep it at 20 and put a 3-15 on it. I'll make a post for the ruger once it arrives but I'm in WA so it'll be at least 20 days from now.

Nobody bats an eye at 6-7 lb 308 bolt actions. If someone finds the recoil objectionable, then good chance they will probably also find carrying a 10-11 lb rifle objectionable too. Probably best to look at a different cartridge in that case.
or look for a different hobby

I have a Ruger MPR that has become my favorite AR so I see potential here. I'm not going to rush out and buy one, but this does have my interest.

The one with a 20" barrel comes in at 7.3 lbs which is decent for an AR pattern 308. But still at least 1 lb and as much as 2lbs heavier than many bolt rifles. Scoped and with a loaded 20 round magazine it's going to be closer to 9 lbs, maybe more. But I can still see where I might use it.

Folks have been playing QC for Sig, Remington, Kel-Tec, etc for years. I don’t see any reason they wouldn’t do the same for Ruger. With Ruger’s customer service, if you get a lemon, they’ll make it right.

That's what I said when I paid for the privilege of being a beta tester for Springfield Armory, and while hopefully SA will eventually make my 1911DS run 100% of the time (instead of 90% of the time, works every time), I have to say I can't recommend being a volunteer quality tester even for companies with 'good' customer service.

Everybody puts out a lemon at times. Ruger didn’t build a brand around poor quality. Neither did Springfield Armory.

I have 2 PSA-10's. One is heavy with a scope, bipod, long heave barrel and supressor. Thing is huge. The other is a 18" barrel with carry handle sights. Both are fun to shoot and accurate. I rarely shoot my 5.56 ARs anymore.

I will be watching for range reports on this new smaller Ruger. If they run well I will be a buyer.

Are these piston guns ?

I know that DPMS had the trade marks and copyrights locked down pretty good with their G2 308 AR's. From what I remember, DPMS went after Palmetto State Armory when PSA introduced their version some years ago. I am guessing that all the copyrights must have went out the window when Remington/DPMS went out of business, or Ruger bought the rights.

And yes some AR15 parts do interchange with any DPMS pattern AR to include the fire control group, pistol grip and sometimes the take down pins (depending on manufacturer).

I would love to see an industry wide standard for the PMS pattern large frame AR. I would also like to see a set standard for the DPMS G2 and Ruger SFAR.

And now Palmetto State owns DPMS

But did they get the full rights to the DPMS G2?

Did Ruger somehow purchase said rights?

Or is the design no longer copyright protected?

It will be interesting to see if PSA reintroduces their version again.

Who says this has anything in common with a G2? There are already several other companies making similar products such as Savage and POF Armory, and one other that escapes me.

Copyright does not apply to mechanical designs. Copyright is only pertinent to creative works such as pictures, video, text, music, ect... Trademark also only protects slogans, logo's, and product names. If you want to protect a mechanical design you have to patent it, but you cannot legally defend a patent that is based on an existing patent or thing that is already in the public domain. All the patents on the AR10 and AR15 have long expired, so anyone is free to copy or alter or modify those designs to their hearts content. In order to patent it you would need to come up with some new feature, but even then it only applies to that feature, not the whole firearm.

Sorry for using the wrong terms. I meant to say patents. And Yes DPMS did enforce them when Palmetto State came out the the PSA version of the G2

I would like to have a Ruger SFAR. I like the concept and I like the .308 Winchester cartridge. Funny how .308 was a golden child a few years back and now it’s spoken of with a kind of disdain. Funny actually.

Anyway, I see one of these babies in my future. Maybe not this calendar year but maybe by next summer.

PS: No, I do not wish to discuss your opinions of the .308. My comments weren’t bait for a heated discussion or a sideways snipe at another cartridge. I like the .308, just as others have their preferences.

Edit: I almost forgot. Grab-a-gun sent me an email yesterday that they had the 16” and the 20” for $1099. They are out of stock now.

What specific patent did DPMS have that PSA infringed on? I could not find any info. If they really did then there must be something specific. Chrysler can’t sue everyone else for making minivans just because they made the first one. There is a higher legal burden than that, though sometimes larger companies will sue or intimidate frivolously just to tie up their competitors for a few years in the legal system.

You can sue someone for copyright if they make a product that is very similar visually to yours, such as if you made an sneaker that is an exact copy of a Nike, but generally you would have to prove that your aesthetic design was actually unique and original. It would be pretty difficult for DPMS to show that since AR’s have been made in 100,000 flavors already.
