Guys,

Just ordered one for my upcoming MT trip, plus it's getting to be a PITA to pick them up when I can't use the tractor bucket. My preferred method:

Biggest concern for the MT hunt was that due to CWD, only boned out/processed meat can come back. So I'm setting up a mobile butchering station. But the hoist will work well when using my UTV locally.

I made 1 like that a few years ago, I have issues lifting anything heavy. original goal was to just get the deer in the truck by myself. so I used a round pipe for vertical then smaller pipe inside for riser. can spin the top bar 360%. found it also makes a good butchering/skinning host.

I envy you skilled DIY guys!

Unfortunately about all I learned through my adult life is .mil stuff. I was one heck of a fire support officer, a wiz at manual gunnery, could compute probable errors and preclusionary analysis for low yield tactical nukes, but I'm dangerous with most common hand tools.:(

My son has that exact one, used on a receiver hitch on a 4 wheel drive, 3 inch lifted, full size pickup. He had to cut off the lower foot extension to keep it from dragging. Other than that it has been great!

I’m close to making one to simplify the butchering process at my property. This season or next. I’ll probably just shoot one this year and see how the ground quartering goes again before I decide.

Those are cool- a friend of mine who lives "in town" uses one and he is able to get the deer quartered and in the cooler and leave all the trash in the woods before he leaves the dirt road. When he does his processing, all he needs to toss is some bones and trimmings, plus he doesn't have to wash out the bed of his truck.

Normally I just hang and qtr in my barn, I've got a couple pully systems with gambrels set up for it . Last year on our WY antelope hunt I ended up skinning and quartering on a tarp...trying to avoid that again for this trip. All was going well, then a couple breezes came. Plus the whole on my knees on semi rocky ground thing got old pretty quick.

It is a concern, I might have to transport in the bed, then assemble once ready to load, and dismount once loaded. I've looked at a bunch of pictures and it does look like the foot will be close, to close for travelling on uneven ground. I've already got a hitch extension to make hooking up the trailer easier. It puts the ball about 6" past the tailgate, but won't help the ground clearance. I also looked at a tripod, but this seems to be faster setup.

I had a heavy-duty one welded up with a boat winch about 4 years ago. Especially good for heavy hogs.
Make sure that the one you get pivots so you can swing the deer into/out of the truck bed.

Yup, this one has the swivel. There's a couple reviews that state depending on your hitch, you may not be able to swivel 360 because the winch & handle are right at tailgate level. I'll sort it out once it gets here, and I can throw my extension in just in case. I've got a topper on my pickup, so ground to tailgate is the best I'm going to get.

Something like this would be good for skinning out animals on the trap line.
We have a meat pole at my brother's place.

It'd be my choice too, but some places, WY, SD, and even western KS there's a shocking shortage of trees:(

Not NE KS though, we have a plethora of lovely trees and rolling hillsides. Our area is always photographed in color, unlike the other parts of KS that folks complain about while driving through....:D We'd probably have a fantastic fall foliage watching tradition like the New England states, IF the wind didn't come and blow all the leaves off the trees right after they turn.

This "gadget" is just a more mobile solution.

Actually, I liked the piranha teeth on the bucket best..

I used overhead tree limb, rope (tied to truck bumper), and gambrel (that I welded). Use the truck to apply the correct amount of lift to hoist deer up and skin/quarter as you go.

My uncle has a little building behind his house that has a whole bunch of built in ones that I always use. A lot of relatives dog hunt so its not uncommon for the group to come back with up to a dozen or so deer so they need multiple "stations" to be working on.

I'm planning on taking a public land pronghorn hunt next year (Wyoming) and have looked into one of the trailer hitch mounted ones for that purpose.

My pronghorn hunt in WY last year was the catalyst for ordering one! A shocking shortage of trees in that area :D For the mobile hunter, it or another variation, are probably the way to go.

In a way of an update. I received the one I ordered, no issues assembling it. It can be transported around on the truck hitch without issue. IMHO, it's too low to drive the UTV while mounted, even with the stabilizing foot removed. Definitely going to have to assemble on site, load deer, and disassemble for transport. Good news is, it takes down easily/quickly using several pins.

The gambrel locks into the head, so you will avoid having the animal swing about while processing.

We used maw maws metal framed swing. Take the swing off and tug. Could have used the tractor to pull them up. But I think my uncle was being a jerk.
