I like my RCBS reloading equipment and my Hornaday GS1500 scale took a poop on me. I looked up RCBS and their most expensive scale the Rangemaster sells for $169.99 but I found it new on Ebay for $114.99. Is the one on Ebay a second or rehabed unit and if not why can they sell the same product for $55.00 less than the RCBS Retailer? I am confused about the prices on Retailers and the prices on Discount sites like Ebay and Amazon, can someone explain how the prices can be so different? Thanks

retainer might have a MAP agreement with RCBS. sometimes those retailers put stuff on at a cheaper price for quick profits. Under a none retailer name.

There's no reason to believe $114.99 is a scam. Midway sells it for $119.99

Midway is a high volume retailer for RCBS, I wouldn't expect Mr eBay to be able to buy them cheaper than Midway. Not saying Larry isn't making any money... we all know he is... but I find it unusual. That is not to say it's just a one-off sale of something someone got, or was setting unused on the shelf. Unless you axe direct questions, you'll never know until it pulls up on your doorstep.

Manufacturers generally post their "manufacturers suggested retail price", which nobody pays. MSRP gives resellers a price umbrella to work under.

I'm glad you said it because I was about to post the same information.

EBay items most times are not scams. (no I don't buy there but for different reasons)
Also...
Amazon doesn't always have a cheaper price.
Example: I was looking for a ZEP professional spray bottle a few days ago. Amazon price was $9.09 but I bought it from Home Depot the next day for only $3.48. Both purchases are subject to sales tax. For the price of 1 on Amazon plus $1.35 I could have bought 3 from Home Depot.

I just got got on a gallon of bar oil. It was 12 at home depot and 16 on Amazon. It arrived shipped directly from home depot. They made 4 dollars on knowledge.

What is the eBay seller’s feedback rating? (I avoid those with a 98 or below).
Does the seller accept returns? If not, I would look elsewhere.

I avoid Ebay sellers boasting "new" anything and Amazon completely. Chances are it's a bootleg reproduction or at best a legit product that has something wrong with it they're not saying.

If the business buying them for resale IS eBay, I would believe it.

Not knowing who is selling them, anything else I say would just be a guess.

If you have a way for a no fuss/hassle return for a full refund if it’s not as described, all you have to loose is your time and probably return shipping.

I bought a Radar Detector on Ebay years ago. Locally, it was like 300 bucks. Got it on Ebay for 100, was happy. It died after a few months, called the manufacturer..."sorry, that serial number does not exist in our inventory, you've purchased a counterfeit and we can't warranty it".

YMMV. Sometimes it might be a good deal, and sometimes you might not be buying anything close to what you think you're buying. I probably wouldn't take the risk with my scale.

You are paying for the RCBS 'Name" or Hornady. They are all made in China and you can get the same scales for a lot less then the name brand,

made in China but under American standards. Not all things made in China are bad quality, look at the Iphone. I’m still using my 7 and it BOMB

Midway is a very good place to buy a RCBS scale. I like mine a lot. I buy all my reloading equipment from Midway. Sure...I check other places. Midway always seems to come up the winner. And they give great service.

True.. also places like Amazon will unknowingly sell counterfeit. It’s a huge problem for Amazon. Look who the seller is, if it’s a third party seller (know as 3P) and the price is too good to be true… well you know the saying

I'm not saying everything on eBay is junk or counterfeit, but I am saying... much like working up a new load for a new cartridge... exercise due diligence. How many posts have you seen about scammers using legit looking websites? People selling guns that don't exist? Phishing links in your email? It's all out there. eBay is no different.

Ebay is a place I go to buy things no longer made. If it's 20 or more years old, likely it's not counterfeit. I rarely post eBay stuff here but I did with a powder throw yesterday. I'm also not a gambler but I'd wager a 70 year old powder throw is not on china's whe have to copy list. They are focused on making stihl chainsaws for half the price using crappy plastic, and low budget bearings.

Quite a few Ebay sellers are bigger retailers. They use EBay, Amazon, Etsy and others as sales outlets. Look at the volume of sales for that seller, their feedback and you will get a hint. It’s not unusual to order off EBay and the item arrives in an Amazon box. It’s more than just a big yard sale these days.

I have a strong distrust of both Ebay and Amazon. I may as well include Gunbroker here too! For such a small difference in price I would defiantly buy it from Midway. Ebay and Amazon are ok if you are careful and knowledgeable about what you are buying.
Just to be fair, my Wife gets 2 or 3 Amazon deliveries a week! :) I also recently bought a hard to find H&G bullet mold from an Ebay auction that I am totally satisfied with.
