Just Scored some Li’Gun

I bought some from Powder Valley a few weeks ago. Was it one of the powders that has been impossible to find for the last few years?

Im hoping to find rifle powder. Last week i was planing on going. But my alternator failed on the way. I have pain docs close to my LGS. So i check in while im in the area.

Yes i figure im good to the spring. The mini 14 is sucking down primers and powder. Wont be shooting much when the cold settles in. I shoot air guns in the house when winter hits.

It’s been available online for a while. I haven’t tried it as I’ve heard rumors of it being hard on forcing cones. Not sure how much validity that has to it but if I recall it was one of the more trustworthy outfits claiming it. Freedom arms maybe? Something to look into!

I use it on my super mag rounds (I think) .50bw, .458 SC .. cheap AR uppers from BCA. Let it do it thang

I've got most of a pound of Lil Gun that I'll never use any more of. It burns hotter than any other powder I know of.

Give me 296/H110 any day, and now we also have 11FS and 300MP as well.

I like H110 for .460 mag and .454C

I read stick powders are hard on rifles. How true that is who knows. I like varget and IMR 4895. Both stick powders.
The added nitroglycerin content of ball powder is what makes it so hard on metal. It burns hotter, as well, there are more chemical stabilizers which can lead to a less clean burn.
Extruded stick powders are nitrocellulose and are more stable, even though both are degrading as they age. Generally they burn cooler and more cleanly. Vihtavuori makes only extruded powders and are considered the cleanest around.

Lil Gun is alleged to burn forcing cones. Ball powders are more easy to move down the barrel during combustion, moving the heat towards the cylinder gap. I contend all powders are burning in this region regardless of shape.
It is also a favorite in AR cartridges. One would think there are at least a few pedantic AR shooters that would measure their forcing cone, I mean, throat, and discover some egregious amount of erosion. Especially at there common rate of fire with an AR, not many 460 Smith shooters are doing 100 rounds in an outing.

I shied away and bought an 8lber of H-110. After thinking about it, I’m disappointed I left 110FPS on the table. But, I doubt I would be dissatisfied with either way.

Faster burn with more gas production than H-110. What’s not to like?
Realizing, of course, performance comes at a price. That gas doesn’t come from nowhere.

I guess revolver shooters don’t really like replacing barrels though. I’ll tomato stake a brand new AR barrel if it sucks. Life is too short for bad barrels.

works great with the giant brakes I have at the end of the barrel

I stuck out today powder wise at the LGS. He had RL7. But i was not paying 52.00 plus tax. For a lb. He had some Hodgden rifle powder for 32 bucks. It was something i never heard of before. I looked in a Hodgdon booklet he had there. It wasn't listed for .223/556. The loads on the bottle was for stuff like 300 win mag up to 50 BMG. I did buy some Winchester 223 55 grain ammo. 100 rounds. 70 bucks.

Bingo! Counterintuitively, the slower powders with more gas shoot softer in my braked AR. I notice my reloads are louder, but easier on the shoulder and wrist. But my cases have no free space, the Hornady Custom Match ammunition I’ve shot in my Bushmaster and Eagle do. Their powder must be faster, as it still clocks the same speeds. But without the fireball. So, little joy.;)

I know, right? The local Dunhams is stocked, and I understand why. It was $70 for a fifty round box of 32 Auto!:what:
Al got twice the lead for the same price!;)
