Gun terms that get misused or misspelled

Eh as long as I know what they are talking about, makes no difference to me how someone wants to spell or say something. Being a hillbilly from east kentucky, it sounds like banjos playing when I talk sometimes, but everyone seems to understand what I'm saying.

Obviously you were not in this area when Browning production moved from FN to Miroku.
"I put up my Belgium Browning and got a Mossberg to hunt with."
I think the "put up" jars almost as bad as "Belgium Browning."
Fortunately that was before "Mossy" was current lingo.

As far as pronunciation goes, there are fair numbers of "Smith and Westerns" around here, and even some "Sig Sawyers."

I can let most schoolhouse grammar slide, but that big old apostrophe just pokes me in the eyes when used for a plural.
"I have lots of Colt's from Colt's Pt. F.A. Mfg. Co." Same word, but wrong, then right usage.

I try to hold back comments on such misuse as ".32 Smith and Wesson Short" and ".308" bore diameter." Not always successfully.

Sako. Should be pronounced "Sock-O"
Tikka. Should be pronounced "Tick-A"

My biggest pet peeve is folks who misuse optics terminology. For example an 8X opic is simply 8 times magnification. You can include the front objective size but it is optional. If so it would be 8X40 or 8X32 for example. Doesn't matter if it is binoculars or a scope.

With variable power scopes the range of magnification is listed as 3-9X, 1-4X, etc. If the objective size is listed it comes after the X. For example 3-9X40. If you literally read the words and symbols it makes no sense to write 3X9X40.

I usually say, for example, "one through four by thirty-two" to mean 1-4x and 32 mm objective. Right?

These two are on my pet peeve list:

Even though it seems like the 'u' should come before the 'a' in "gauge" like it does in words like "assuage", it doesn't.
When I see folks talking about their 12 guage shotgun, I wonder how they are pronouncing it. goo-ij? kwage?

And there's the ever popular "muzzle break" used instead of "muzzle brake". I have asked some members how they get good groups if their muzzle is broken. ;)

After 20+ years working with people from different places, and some of those people english is not even their first language, you learn to ignore these things. I once asked a supply sgt from PR for some spray paint and he had no idea what I was talking about until I showed him what I wanted. He said oh- es-pray pain! The important thing was that he ended getting me the espary paint or whatever it was that I needed. I'm a product of the Florida public school system, so I'm not going to throw rocks in a glass house.
