Exercise to strengthen arms-

Pushups of all types, curls, and pullups is what I do.

Agree. Plus I like to do some wrist curls between sets. Wish I could do handstand push-ups like I could when I was young and a pole vaulter, but I got too much mid section weight to do more than one or two :)

One of my favorite … litmus tests, is to run sets of slow fire with the ITarget pro between dumbbell and heavy bag sets, preferably when I can barely feel my arms.

If I can keep er steady and on target with a heart rate of 120+ and tired arms, I’m in a good place.

Pushups strengthen the shoulder while tightening it up while pullups stretch the joint, did a gazillion pushups to rehab my shoulder after rotator cuff surgery, surgeon said no pullups.

I do a lot of chainsaw work which really works the "hold things up" muscles, but pushups keep the joint tight and stops it from pinching.

Title says "strengthen arms", pushups do that.

Sure, an all around work out is always better, but how many have the discipline.

My dad worked with a guy that shot Bullseye flintlock competition. He walked around with a 4# dead blow hammer at arms length, pointing at objects.
He claimed, aiming his pistol was no different than pointing his finger.
I am picturing Karl from the movie “Sling Blade”.

“- Doyle Hargraves: What in the hell you doin' with that hammer?
- Karl Childers: I don't rightly know. I just kinda woke up holding it.”

Short dowel rod about 1.25-1.75 inch in diameter 12-18 inches long. Hang a small weight from a string (~3-4 ft long) tied around the center of the dowel rod. Hold it out a arms length, arms straight, and using your hands and wrists roll the weight up and back down several times. Increase weight as needed.

Shoot more too!

Chiming in to say take caution when exercising to learn good technique. One life lesson I have learned is that a few guided lessons from a professional is money and time well spent. Poorly executed push ups account for many a shoulder injury and failing to stretch is always a fail.

My older body won’t take the routine it once could so for me it’s cycling with a fast(ish) pace for distance, recently added kayaking to work my upper body and core, then reps with dumbbells in conjunction with tv watching. Every commercial, bathroom break, etc. gives you 1 minute to keep toned. I also chose to lighten up on the weights in favor of higher reps so 40 lb bells are what I limit my lazy man routine to.

Sounds pretty pedestrian but it’s easy enough and believe it or not, I had 50 other kayakers (that is to say all of them) of various description chasing me down river last event despite fancy equipment, youth, and in some cases much better physiques. Just a whisper behind me out of the locks was a woman 10 years my senior Another example of technique overcoming pure physical advantage.

I should probably do something to tone up a bit. I have a weight machine with barbells & dumbell weights I bought used for next to nothing. I guess I need to try to find a routine to start following. I've worked commercial construction since '89 & have never really felt the need due to my job being pretty physical, (lots of lifting, carrying, climbing, walking using hand & power tools), but here lately it seems like the foremen are taking it too easy on me. At 57 they seem to regard me as old & have me doing more of the thinking, planning (this takes some of the load off of them) & less of the heavy lifting. I can tell a difference in between how my chest & shoulders are now versus a couple of years ago.
If I do this I will probably try to get my 9 year old son started on it as well. I don't want to bulk up huge but would like to tone & build my core & upper body strength back up some.
