I know there are some amazing leather workers out there.
I really have not a clue. Some time ago I bought a decent leather shoulder holster. I have been enjoying it but recently I have been wishing I had bought something fancier.
When I was a young hippie I had fun doing some leather working.
Is it possible or feasible to get some basic leather tools to add some ‘art’ to the holster?
Would the soaking necessary to do the tooling require the rig to be reblocked? Could I tool the leather using support blocks so I don’t have to unstitch it?
Should I just bite the bullet and buy a new fancier rig?

Any constructive advice appreciated.

The problem is multi-facted. Leather is always tooled laying flat, so the holster would have to be deconstructed, wetted and flattened. That's going to be a problem if the main seam is glued, which they usually are. Most also have an acrylic resolene finish which not only presents a problem in getting it wet enough to flatten but also to tool it. Then there's the issue that a great many mass production holsters are "baked" to solidify their shape. May not even get it to flatten. In a nutshell, I'd recommend saving your pennies and buying a fancier rig. El Paso Saddlery will pretty much floral carve anything they make. I have this carved Tanker rig and Dad has a carved Spyder shoulder rig.

Thanks. That was my suspicion. Unfortunately nobody makes a fancy holster for my little 9mm.

Let me add another "not to try this" reason. Even if you could get it flat and properly cased no one just picks up some stamps and does a good job with their first try.

OTOH, the good news is you now have a VERY important reason to buy a new, properly tooled quality holster. You know you want to ...

Or, get a big piece of leather to practice on with enough left over to make an entirely new one.
