I recently acquired a single shot 24 gauge percussion smoothbore, I’ve never seen one like this, any help identifying it would be greatly appreciated.
It’s marked W D Carlton, Woodstock V
That’s the only markings I can find.

Looks remarkably like a Mowry.
Very similar, but a few differences.
I wonder if the Mowrey is based on this type of smoothbore?

I found a thread on here about the “Mowrey-Mowry” discussion, I’ll have to look into this more. Thanks for the heads up.

It's also similar to an Allen & Thurber. Yes A&T made shotguns. The Mowry internals are nothing like yours. I don't know about the A&T internals as I haven't found a pic of those.

Allen and Thurber is the name I couldn't remember, thanks Hawg. Never had much interest in that particular design although I did know a fellow who shot a Mowry on rare occasion. His had a really nice maple stock, that's what caught my interest.

So he was a "Machinist" in 1847 and a "Gunsmith" in 1860 and died that year so your gun was probably made after 1847 and definitely before 1861!

@Ephraim Kibbey
Thank you sir, that’s exactly what I needed.
For the life of me, I’m not sure why I hadn’t thought of looking up his name on Ancestry.
The Woodstock V marked on the barrel would definitely be from his town in Vermont.

A quick update on the history of the smoothbore.
@Ephraim Kibbey so kindly found the original maker, I decided to dig in and have the gun appraised.
The gun was made in 1858 by W.D.Carlton under contract from Springfield to take rifled barrels, rebore smooth, attach his breech and sell the guns to freedmen and former slave that made it north before the war.
Most were sold for next to nothing and used for sustenance.
There is a museum in Vermont that has the only other known copy of this gun.
History is just fascinating.
