North South Skirmish Association Nationals, Fall 2022. Yup, we burned a bunch of the holy black, sent tons of lead into the backstop. Had a great time. My oldest son was there and we shot 4 events together. His first event was Smoothbore where I put an original 1835 Potsdam in his hands. He did very well with it. We also shot the Carbine and Musket events but I think he may have had the most fun shooting artillery. And again, we ain't no blank firing reenactors, this is all live ammunition. So for some pix

The Fog of War pays a visit to every Nationals. Nothing like 63 teams of eight guys to smoke up the range, and that was only Relay 1 of 3.

My son and myself finishing loading for the start of the Smoothbore match.

Since he lives in Kansas and can't regularly come to our range, he needed some trigger time during the practice sessions earlier in the week. Yup, he's still got it with the 1863 Sharps.

Musket match on Sunday. We're doing Time/Safety and Line Judge

Safety is always paramount. Here he's clearing the team commander before I confirm the score with him. Once we do that, then we go to the scoring bench to enter the score into the match records.

This is an older pic from a year ago but we're crewing the same howitzer that we shot in Nationals and he's manning the same position on the gun. At Nationals, I had the white gunner's haversack on the guy in the foreground. My job was the thumbstall on the vent, and when loaded "pick and prime" to complete firing preparations.

I used to go to the N-SSA Nationals every year, spring and fall, mainly for the shopping on Sutlers' Row. That routine was a casualty of the pandemic. I was hoping to go again this fall, but I was too tired after my recent European trip. Age will do that to you.

Now we know were all the Black powder went! lol Looks like a TON of FUN!

Yup it is a hoot!

I picked up another case and 4k caps while there from Back Creek and I'm not a "power user". Like I said on another post, we are probably the largest single civilian user of real black in the country. So much so that the mucky mucks of the powder manufacturers paid a personal visit to the owners of Back Creek.

Here's some pix of huge powder consumption in progress- the artillery match-

How many jugs of powder do those bad boys eat up! It’s nice to see a group of Canon lovers get together and shoot! talk about a expensive hobby!

The reenactors around here use service charges. 2.5 pounds of powder for a 12 pound Napoleon and 1.25 pounds for a 6 pound.
back in the Civil War days, did they fill the canon balls with explosives?

Some of them were. Explosive shells were filled with iron balls, either grape shot or canister shot. Grape was bigger than canister.

I posted a while back about our powder consumption

I can say this much about our consumption rate, in Nationals small arms competition alone, we, as an organization, go through over 2.5 tons and that figure doesn't include artillery, regional shoots or artillery competitions. I personally use close to 50lbs per year in small arms competition and practice and I'm pretty much a "normal" competitor.

50# is a good $1500 these days. You save any money making your own powder?
