Yep. We'll see how things go today. I can tell she'd rather sell it to me than them but she really needs the money too. If she ends up losing her apartment...and maybe her marbles along with it... we'd also maybe end up losing a valuable employee during the holidays, which would suck. She misses at least one day of work per week but has FMLA time. Still, she doesn't get paid for that. Recently a new doctor started messing with her medication which has kind of precipitated all this. When she IS at work, she does a fine job though.

I am thinking the unconfirmed serial number prefix may be more of a police trade-in thing as alluded to earlier.

Really boils down to if you want to help this person out or not, and how much. Personally, this isn't a situation where I "bottom dollar" someone. You will know how you want to proceed with this. I hope it works out for both of you.

[EDIT: One big plus of you buying it, even at a slight premium, over the LGS is that maybe this person can buy it back from you when things get better. Especially since the gun isn't your cup of tea to begin with. That would be a great outcome in my view. Something to consider.]

There are many triple alfa serial numbers for Smith and Wesson guns that do not show up in the SCSW 4th edition. That is why they are so hard to pin down. I have 3 or 4 myself that aren't listed. Best you can do is find a letter set that is as close as possible and estimate from there.

So they offered her $300 and I bought it for $325. She seemed satisfied. I know I sure am!

I didnt know it was so tiny. It barely fits my hand but it fits. It great, really! Probably the smallest gun I've ever owned. I don't even have a holster which fits it, so I guess I need to address that soon. However there was one thing that kind of concerns me. The guy at the LGS said that our State Police are notoriously slow for updating ownership files on firearms. I'm not exactly sure how that works...but he said I should carry that bill of sale with me for awhile...like up to TWO YEARS! :what:

Anyway, I am elated now to find that the speed loaders I was using for my Charter Arms 357 Bulldog fit it just fine. I stopped at the old abandoned road nearby and squeezed off three shots into a bank, of some Atomic 158gr +P. It shoots beautifully...but I probably won't be shooting much of that kind of stuff out of it in the future! The girl gave me a box of Hornady 125gr standard 38's with it and I'm probably going to mostly stay at that level, I think. I had no idea this gun was such a pipsqueak, but that's ok. I now have me the best pocket gun l've ever owned.

Is S&W using laser dot now to make serial numbers?

It appeared to be laser-dotted, yes. And she showed me a second serial# stamp near the ejector shroud. It clearly says Model 60-7 there. Apparently that's the "Lady Smith" but it doesn't say so anywhere on it. Right now I keep a charter arms 357 loaded with 38 for my wife in the house. Maybe this will end up replacing it or maybe I'll just keep it as back up and deep concealment for myself. My wife isn't very gun savvy so possibly the longer barrel will be better for her.

I am sorry to hear about her plight, I hope the $325 she received helps her get over the rough patch. You went out of your way to help her out, I think you did a darn good thing .

I know a little bit of how she feels and its not fun. I sold a Savage M99F .308 that my Dad gave me as a 16th birthday present when I was in college. I had a choice; sell it and pay a couple months rent or keep it and move into my car. :(

I still miss that gun every day, and I still feel like a heel for selling it. But the proceeds helped tide me over between jobs until things got better. They did for me, and I truly hope she has the same turn of luck that I did.

Bless you both, stay safe.

60-7 puts it at 1990 for a year of mfr. The other number under the crane is the assembly number, not a serial number.
It really did have exactly the same number as the number on the butt, and was the number the LGS used to run it through the system..
They are not now and have not for quite some time, but for a while they did use a dot matrix type of engraver for serial numbers

What you say, I guess. I thought they used a laser to make those dots sometimes, as they seem to be dark, almost burned.(pulse-pulse-pulse-pulse).

I hope your friend feels better soon.

They are nice little revolvers. If you practice a lot, you may surprise yourself with your accuracy.

That is a fair price for a used 2", imho.

I bought a brand-new 642 last year for just a little more than that.

Both low ball offers.

If you really wanted to help her, $100 over dealer offer, would be "helping".

Sorry.

She already knew that that's what I was able to pay when we went in the store. I'm not made of money either and this was kind of a surprise. She had only told me the night before. I also told her that she could buy it back from me someday if she wanted for the same amount. That would be fine. I would just run out and get something else I like if I didn't need the money.

I went online last night looking for some nice light loads to shoot out of this new little sweetie. Somehow instead I ended up ordering from Midway four boxes of Underwood 38 +p rated at 555 ft/lbs at the nuzzle! Well'p...I guess that'll be for the Windicator and the Bulldog. I thought about picking up some ARX Inceptor 77 grain stuff for the 60 but changed my mind after reading some so-so reviews.

I think the person who said this was manufactured around 1990 was probably spot on. That was the first year the 60-7 came out I believe.... And since it doesn't have any of those Chief's Special or Ladysmith marketing tags it's probably one of the first before they started doing that. I'm really glad it's just a nice little nondescript stainless steel j frame with nothing but the Smith & Wesson insignia and the serial number.

That has the MIM parts, but no lock. Look at Driftwood and P5s pictures of older model with the flash chromed forged part; Driftwood's is really early, with a pinned barrel.
There's little to be gained with really hot loads in snubs, but it does make it harder for follow up shots. Later M60s were +p rated, but it doesn't necessarily make it a good idea.
A M60 is a great little revo. You helped out a colleague, and, frankly, if she is having emotional issues, better the gun be (at least temporarily ) away from her.
Be well,
Moon

Midway didn't seem to have good standard HP's at a good price. I'll eventually find some elsewhere.

I was thinking about that (her having the issues and a gun around the house). At first I even thought maybe SHE wanted it out for that very reason. But no, she was about to lose her apartment because she called off and left early so much. She had a new Psych who starting messing with her meds. Apparently she was taking too much to keep her anxiety down... And the doc froze some of her prescrips which sent her teetering. So all that came crashing down at once.

She seems to be doing better now, isn't crying and choked up so much, and is almost caught up on her rent. Another co-worker gave or lent her $100 as well.
