I did a quick 100 yard pre hunt check of my 30-30 Marlin 336 (3-9 Widefield) today. Since I was down to just 4 Federal 30-30 170 gr, I only fired one to check. Not surprisingly it printed exactly where it did last season.
Then since I didn’t have another box of 170 Federal, I fired one from a new Remington 170 gr box just to make sure they were in the same ballpark.
I was totally surprised to see the Remington printed a full 4” lower than the Federal.
Is this normal?

I shoot 110 yds with 270 Win. It is not uncommon at that range to see 2" of difference between brands. It is not uncommon for Federal and Win. Super X to be a bit more powerful than a Rem loading. I hope that helps.

Not abnormal. Different bullet, different case, different powder are all variables. Sometimes points of impact are the same, or, at least close. Other times not so much.

As long as the bullet is of similar configuration and weight changing brands makes little difference in point of impact. Same weight different profile maybe same point of impact. Different powder and there can be some big surprises even when loaded to the same velocity. This has been my experience. Others may have completely different results.

Probably not typical to be off 4 inches, 1 shot of each brand is certainly not enough information to judge ammunition.
A side note : my 336 will NEVER impact exactly where it did last year. Heck mine shoots about the size of a baseball at one hundred yards so being 2 in one direction and 2 in the opposite could happen although I would first suggest operator error.

It's like in reloading.
Same bullet, same load, different case, different primer, are not going to have the same velocity and will impact differently.
In most cases not significantly, but minor differences will cause changes in impacts and the greater distance, the greater the differences.
Also, different bullets of the same weight will have different impact points.

BTW, y'all know that Remington ammo is now a division of Federal?

Is it? I know that Vista Outdoors owns Federal and CCI and bought the name Remington and the Remington line of ammunition and associated material and the plant in Lonoke. And RemArms, not owned by Vista Outdoors, by agreement licenses the Remington brand name from Remington Ammunition which is held wholly by Vista Outdoors to brand their firearms.

Short answer:

I see your point and recognize that there is a more involved full answer. However, when one head ramrod is giving orders to all and sundry, I think it is fair to say they are effectively divisions of the same company. Note that I was just referring to Remington ammo.

I am derailing the thread I suppose. Just to let you know, I was not meaning to sound argumentative, I thought perhaps you knew something of the ongoing mess that is our ammunition supply that I did not ;). Thank you.

On subject, I have had ammunition of different brands that were very similar so much so they were hard to tell apart and yet they had different POI among various other things. I am not an expert at loading, really a beginner, but I find it somewhat amazing how little (tiny) differences do affect POI, velocity and shall we say, the whole shooting match!

Apologies likewise if I've come across as defensive.

In the same vein, I've had different boxes of identically branded ammo that turned out to be made in different parts of the world from each other. For example, I used to really like Remington Golden Bullet .22 LR, but more recently purchased lots haven't performed nearly as well as some I bought more than a decade earlier. Maybe that will change under Federal overlordship -- for me, CCI is still the gold standard for rimfire.

Why? It looks like he’s enjoying it to me!

Goofy dog loves boxes....all boxes. And you know the little air bubble pack, never see a dog pop them before. She will grab the plastic pre packaged wind turbine fuel....very gently, set it down in the middle of the floor and then jump on it. Total nut.

MidwayUSA has currently best price on Federal 170gr PS. per ammoseek.
I’d put at least two boxes in my shopping cart and wait for a free shipping special.

And if you shot a Winchester round, it probably wouldn't hit where either of the others did.
Very common. They may all group well, but the point of impact will most often differ.

That is not uncommon in any firearm of any caliber. Usually brand A will hit different then brand B. This is why you must sight in with the ammo you are going to use.

And, conversely, Federal ammo, for example... will shoot differently in different firearms. Maybe. It all depends on everything.

For example, I used to really like Remington Golden Bullet .22 LR, but more recently purchased lots haven't performed nearly as well as some I bought more than a decade earlier.

True that! All of my .22's loved Remington Viper, so I bought 2 cases of it. For whatever reason... they decided they didn't like it after that. :cuss: I do agree, however... CCI seems to be the most consistent, so that's where I've gone, now.
