OK, the reason for the quotes in the title is because I got an e-mail/ad from one of the Brownells touting their sale on their "Discreet Tactical Rifle Case" and it's just a standard black soft case with BROWNELLS on the side in red letters. Personally, that's not my idea of discreet..? o_O

What are some effective and realistic versions of discreet cases that members here have used?

The problem with "discreet " cases is, they are only discreet if you have no idea what they are, otherwise, youre not fooling anyone. To anyone who gets any kind of hunting/sporting type catalog, there's a good chance, theyve probably seen whats available, and know what they likely are.

Ive used all sorts of stuff over the years, and things that are at least somewhat believable, are the best way to go. They may take some work to get them to be a reasonable gun case though.

Things like garment bags, backpacks, tool boxes, etc, can help most people pass, as long as they look right with them. Things have "to fit" as a package, or its likely to draw more attention than discretion. If youre carrying a tennis racket bag, it helps if you look like you might actually play tennis. ;)

Get a diaper bag and you can walk anywhere you want with a mac11 HaHa

Just kidding... Nobody do that. Things are not that bad yet.

Snowboard or snowshoe bags would probably work great in CO during the season. Might look a tad out of place in the summer in most places though. :)

The other thing with cases too, is weight and what else you want to carry besides the gun. Weight adds up quickly too, and a lot of things cant carry the weight.

I usually put the gun and a chest bag with mags and a handgun, and a few accessories in there with it. What good is the gun if its not got what it needs to work?

One main peeve of mine with gun cases too is, they attach those mag pockets to the case, instead of making them detachable, with at least a strap, so they are actually useable. What good are they attached to that case?

I doubt anyone would even suspect anything even outside colder areas. As long as its not "tactical" looking and in a "tactical" color people would just think its a tent, telescope... whatever.

Having the mags attach to the case (especially the outside) is meant to show everyone how "tactical" and hip you are. Funny thing is... its more Tactical to carry something that nobody suspects there to be a firearm inside... OPSEC stuff.

My favorite is when people CCW and wear all kinds of fancy tactical clothing or have Glock stickers plastered on their truck. Might as well just wear a sign.. GUNS HERE!!

Anyone looking for something cheap and discreet to try might swing by the local good will or salvation army. All sorts of stuff there. Get some balistic nylon, upolstry thread, automotive headliner foam etc. and you can just use any cheap case as a shell and make it as tactical as you want inside. You really want to reinforce the seams and stitching if you are transporting heavier stuff.

Good pistol case for range bags are soft coolers. They are even waterproof most of the time. Everyone carries those around these days. They are usually made very well and can take weight.

Big plus to this type of stuff is if someone looks inside your car they see a common non interesting bag/case instead of a piece of gear meant for SWAT with a $1000 firearm inside. Also keeps paranoid snoopy neighbors from thinking you are some crazy person. I use tennis/sports/cooler bags 99% of the time because I play tennis all the time. I might try one of those red snowboard bags for rifles though. I dont advertise what I am doing when going for a range session.

Old laptop bags are really cheap at good wills and are well made. I use those for pistols a lot. Well padded and have dividers and pockets (for tools etc).

The snow board and boot bag combo looks pretty good for a redirection but not sure about the discreet factor..?
Especially for us older and less "snowboardy" looking types.

Edit: I see that this is a subject that has been hashed about before although "covert" is a more common term. Good info in those older threads though.

Laptop bags are good for pistols and mags. I use an old electric violin case for my AR and 12 mags. Sling and quick mount scope. It is heavy though.

Guitar case that hav been reinforced can carry quite a bit. Modified golf club bag and home depot tool bags work well.

Wandering around the cities, a decent quality backpack will fit most ar's that are broke down.

I had a full sized break down AR that would fit nicely in a standard 17" soft computer bag. With 8 mags. But that was a specialty build for a purpose. Bag to shooting in 30 seconds. Got it down to 15 with some practice. That was the perfect discrete setup in just about any area.

With everything going on now I wish I'd never sold it.

I have a MOLLE waist bag that is 14"x6.5", if I break down my 4" barrel AR 15 pistol (no blade or brace) I can fit it in there with a couple of extra mags. I have it attached to my 40 liter (three day) bug out bag.

I thought it was ESEE but I can't find in on their website. Somebody makes one that looks like a camping chair bag. Pretty cool if you don't wan to carry a guitar case.

Put a big first aid patch on it and people will just suspect its full of first aid equipment... which a firearm kinda is.... preventative of course but it is life saving equipment.

Good idea. Here's what it looks like:

Both halves fit perfectly, I just propped them up for perspective.

I traveled on a subway in NYC with a shotgun inside a plain gun type cardboard box I'd written "Venetian blinds" on. No one blinked.

I carry my folded Keltec Sub2000 in a laptop shoulder bag.

A gun that breaks down can probably be carried in a case for a pool cue.

I use a camping chair bag.

Gone to the beach for vacation last couple of years and a broke down 16" AR or folding stock AK fits perfectly and I never get a second look.
