I keep saying that I'm going to buy one of those, but it just hasn't been a priority. Video was interesting, thanks for sharing.

Been admiring them for awhile I think it may be time to pull the trigger and get one.

They make beautiful knives but I'm turned off by the logo on the blade. Can't even explain why, it just turns me away.

That was interesting. I'm curious about the pieces that were being stamped and run through the rolling press. It kind of looked like it might be a blade with a very stubby tang, but then they showed all the blades being punched out of sheet?

blades being punched out of sheet?

Established manufacturers don't make knives by billet. Cutlery steel comes in sheets and investing in a blanking die is very practical if you've been in business long before water jet, wire EDM, or LASER.

Read through this thread and decided to learn a bit more about this make... A quick check on E-Bay found two pages of new and used Helle knives - including some listed as "vintage" which I always expect means - more expensive. Great looking blades - here's one that looks nearly new and early enough in the bidding that it's only at $5.50... don't imagine it will stay at that level long...

I expected them all to be die cut from a sheet, that is the only way that makes sense. I still don't know what the press roll was making though

The video has the order of operations mixed up a bit, but watch the guy at 0:33 using the press roll, and then watch the machine that stamps the hot blank at 1:37, it appears to be where the 0:33 guy is getting the pieces to draw out in the roll. He's left with a piece that sort of has a blade shape, but has no tang. Even if you trim the flash off it would be a little stub. Just curious what that is since he's making a pile of them.

For anyone interested I found a more complete video of how the helle knives are made. It doesn't show the operation I was curious about though so that mystery continues haha.
