Ruger SFAR

IMG-0344.jpg

This is the rifle with a 1x8 Trijicon scope. The scope is heavy but with the light weight of the rifle offhand is doable. The rifle is similar in size to my AR-15's and is much lighter than my AR-10. I will not be able to go to the range for several weeks because my wife is working, and I have the grandkids. I will report back after shooting if requested.

Im interested in seeing what the Rugers look like in person. I like the shorter barreled guns though. Ive had a number of different Ruger rifles over the years, good looking rifles, but I was never really happy with how they shot. AR's are pretty hard to screw up in that respect, so Im hoping they arent continuing the trend. :)

I have a M&P10 with a Strike Eagle mounted on it, and I dont find the weight to be an issue. From their spec sheet, the Ruger with the 16" barrel is only about a pound lighter, which I cant imagine would be an issue. I dont find the M&P to be "heavy", but I am accustomed to shooting rifles like M1's, M14's, etc, so Im accustomed to shooting full sized rifles.

That weight also helps take some of the "thump" out of the round, not that its really a thumper, but in things like a lightweight 77, that difference is noticeable.

If I didn't already have a nice 308 AR I would be interested, IMHO they did a really good job designing it. It's a little over 1/2 pound lighter than mine and I was trying to keep weight down within my budget.
ETA then I stuck one of the heaviest 1-8X scopes and a tank of a suppressor on it lol.

I've got two of them, definitely not turds, and definitely way lighter than an M249, M240, and an M60.
While I absolutely agree they are definitely not turds.
Usefulness really depends on what you want to do with them.
If comparing an average AR10 to an average bolt gun, your carrying a pile of extra weight and a shorter barrel (for the same over all length) to get the self cycling.
Not being in a situation where ill ever need that capability, and rather disliking the ergos, they don't offer much interest in usage. Love building the things tho(ARs in general), and were i in need of a semi-auto battle rifle id own more than a few.

Shrink that AR10 down to an Ar-15 size and weight platform, and you have my interest back.....at least to a degree. Give me a 22" barrel in 6 or 6.5CM and ill drop a grand on that.....might even use it sometimes

Comparing an AR10 to a bolt gun is apples and oranges in case uses and piles of what exactly is a pile here? Its not dignified in responding to really because they are two different operating systems plus I favor the semiauto AR115 and AR10 over any bolt gun.

I have no idea what "ergos" are. I honestly don't care about what interests you in usage of anything. So you love assembling, weird flex, still not relevant but okay, although I have no idea what a "tho" is either. In a technical conversation I speak formal and would expect that same courtesy in return, please.

I don't care what you think you do or don't need, again, not relevant here.

If it doesn't interest you, it doesn't interest you and I'm still going to be apathetic to what someone else likes or dislikes compared to what I like or dislike. But again, this isn't about that.

Like it, don't like it, oh well. What you want given is something I have absolutely no interest in, and prefer all my AR-10's and LR308's in .308 in either 16, 8, or 20 inches and I'm happy because again, I buy what I like and not what someone else thinks on the matter but again, this isn't relevant either.

Whether you might use or not, I still won't care.

But speaking as a former 11BC2 before he changed career fields, there are worse things to bemoan about whilst carrying in the field, like an M47 Dragon, and M60 gunner, even a measly M249 too. Compared to all that, the AR10 is a lightweight pussycat. However the SFAR takes it down to an easier level along with the POF Revolution and where both hold my interests, are being the fact that they can share a bunch more parts commonality with the AR15. As a logistics person and a former grunt wanting a reduced logistical footprint to support both, is something worthwhile looking into. It being super lightweight is nice too but not a real requirement of mine because the case use and supply issues is very different between us both.

My apologies if i gave offense.

I was simply stating my opinion that different desires and usage effect our views on equipment, and how the reduced size and weight of the SFAR bridges some of those difference.

All I’m saying is standard large platform ARs are too heavy for my uses and as such are borderline useless.

One less pound gets me interested. Quite interested in fact.

I get your logistical concerns. If I was in supply chain for weaponry, I wouldn’t want to see a change either. I’m just an individual though and as such am “apathetic” to that view as you are apathetic to any and all views which are not your own apparently.

Good luck with that outlook.

Brother, you need to chill out. This is NOT a combative Interwebs site full of hate.

Folks can have opinions and agree or disagree respectfully. Opinions are like buttholes, and if you were .mil you know the rest of that saying.

I’m not some thin skinned snowflake…I spent 40 years in DOD and can deal with plenty of hard core back and forth, but this is a solid and respectful forum.

I’m not looking for or trying to argue. Just telling you that you should probably knock some of the sharp edge off your replies.

ETA: And I need to add, your responses do have a LOT of good info. You have insights that make great points. Just ease up on the attitude a bit.

I used to not be affected by weapon weight but at some point, you just like things easier when possible. I bought and sold an AR-10 myself when I tried to tote it for a carbine shoot. Half way through I was dreading my carbine decision…

Yes, I probably need to get my fit level back closer to where it was, but at 60 that takes a lot of work. I’m doing it, but slowly. Heck; I had to move a few potted citrus trees yesterday that weight around 120 lbs and today, my hands ache something fierce. I know I poked the arthritis bear…and he’s just growling!

I guess I missed these....
I would assume they'll be adding a few caliber choices in the future ? I've not been interested in an AR10 mostly because of the weight. These being lighter have me interested.

I never really gave the weight much thought, but Ive never handled the longer barreled guns with the big scopes and other accessories on them either.

Just doing a side by side "pick up and shoulder" comparison, my M&P10 weighs about the same as my one 10.5" 5.56 gun with its Aimpoint and suppressor mounted, but Ive never weighed either to know what they actually weigh.

As “Pack-muleDad”, I can appreciate the two pound penalty of the larger frame. I have yet to see how it shoots, for these are trying times, but I love how my Built to be light AR handles around the house and yard.

Ostensibly these are for the hunting and Precision shooting that doesn’t involve the huge round count that would warrant a heavier, more comfortable shooting rifle.
I don’t know that I’d want to shoot a Raptor in anything less than an LFAR.

As far as the 99% of time using a rifle, the walking, every little bit helps!:D

What you just described is a POF Rogue. 5.9 lbs naked in an AR-15 sized frame, but chambered in 308. It has become one of my favorite rifles.

That's understandable, and thank you.

I bought or assembled when there were no other options, they were still never turds to me. But then again, I've seen grown men cry about an AR15 or M16 if it was a hair above 6 or 7 pounds.

How's the recoil with those? One of the things I dread is the extra thump when weights are reduced, especially from those battle rifle sized cartridges. I was finally able to tame mine, but money had to be thrown at it and a lot of reading and questions asked.

As far as weight, maybe I should clarify that my AR-10 weighs 11.2 pounds without a scope. This is why I call it a beast.

You could take off two to three pounds by taking off that PRS stock and using a carbine extension and a carbine stock of your choosing. Get the Scalarworks LEAP/08 to replace that ADM cantilever would also help in weight reduction as well.
