So yesterday was the start of TN muzzleloader season and I dusted off my old T/C Big Bore .58-cal and loaded it up for some hunting. Still using real blackpowder but have caved to new modern pistol bullets in polymer sabots. But that got me wondering what evolution of muzzle loader and ignition system are you guys using.

I didn't get a deer but I did add another armadillo to the growing heap I have killed this year.

#10 since June of this year.

The Trigger stick are awesome by the way.

Pictures are always good.

I might use my .45 flintlock this year, but more likely will be my trusty T/C Hawken. 54. Sometimes I use it during regular firearms season, as well as muzzleloader season.

Here it is hanging out from the mantle of our 1881 farmhouse. I would estimate that I have taken 25 deer with this rifle....including the biggest buck of my life.

Our muzzleloader season in Nebraska is the entire month of December. I will use my trusty TC New Englander in .50 caliber. I use holy black and like the Hornady PA ball-ets. My shots are within 40 yards. Looking forward to camping in the timber along the river with friends and family. hc18flyer

CVA Wolf. I originally got one because it was cheap. Loved it. Then when the easy twist breachplug updated ones were on sale I got a second one so I could bring friends during muzzleloader season. Love that one too.
To answer the question, they are modern break action in-lines with 209 primers.
I use hornady fpb bullets in one of them and since I can no longer find those I use power belts in the other.

It’s my first year at it. I’d like to pick up a hawken of some sort but this year Im just borrowing and old cva firebolt. I’ve gotta get some powder for it as it came with pellets but the rifle uses #11 caps so I feel like I’ll get less of a hangfire with loose powder vs pellets. I’ve got some power belts but need to find something else as im running short.

muzzleloader season only last 4 days here so im not stressing about it

The Thompson Center Omega my father bought for me.
I didn't expect him to go buy a pair of them just so we could spend more time in the field together by also hunting the muzzleloader season.

A good size doe from a couple of years ago.

I've been using 250 powerbelts, but this year I'm going with 290 Bore Drivers, we'll see how they do.

I can’t remember which powerbelts I’m using but they’re accurate with 90gr pyrodex. I love the fpbs over 100gr pyrodex but apparently not many others loved them because they’re gone. I have six more, then I’ll switch that one to powerbelts too. I’ll update when I get time to see which powerbelts I’ve been using.

edit to add: checked. 250gr powerbelt aerolites

CVA Accura. I've taken one deer with my FIL's Hawken. I bought my ML because it gave me an additional 10 days to hunt after the end of gun season and was legal in shotgun only units (which at the time was most of the places I hunted) and I didn't have an appropriate shotgun. Hard to believe that it has been 11 years since I took a deer with my ML. NY opened up all the places I hunt to rifles and the ML season is in the very busy run-up to Christmas.

Muzzleloader kits were my winter projects when I was younger. I think that I have put together 2 Kentuckies, a Hawken and a New Englander. Then old age caught up with me and I couldn't see the iron sights well enough to be proficient. I bought the first Ruger that I saw and made the prediction that they would probably come out with a stainless model the next year. My crystal ball was right. The blue/walnut one has too many notches in it now, so I guess that I will keep it.

Oh my, I’ve experienced a new sorrow. When a fat doe walks out and the cap goes off but the charge doesn’t. I guess my nipple was clogged . Shameful I know, you can bet that thing will be spotless from now on!
One more day to connect before It switches to modern firearms. I love hunting in Alabama
