Savage MSR AR10's and AR 15's discontinued?

Ive read that "supply chain issues" are why they pulled them from their website. Supposedly they'll build them again when they get parts.
I dont believe that one bit. Savage AR's were never a great seller. It has nothing to do with quality, but buyer perception of the brand.

I thought they were destined for being discontinued before they were ever made.
Savage came late to the AR party and no one invited them inside.

I think you're right on that one. AR's are a commodity item in a HEAVILY saturated market. There's really only room for super cheap discount brands and then more premium stuff that people are willing to pay extra for. Savage AR's didn't fit into either of those categories.

So I’m a huge Savage fan.. the Savage 110 that is. I have likely the most custom built Savage 10 around… But I thought the MSR was a mistake from the start. They got into the AR game too late. So even though I’ve been a Savage fan, I’ve been building AR’s since right after the ‘94 AWB expired. (Which was the beginning of the mainstream AR world!) So people like myself were far too knowledged. Hell! I had already gone to machining my own 80% Billets by the time Savage brought their AR to market!

And yes, their excuse is utter NONSENSE! Savage is like almost every other AR manufacturer, they mostly assemble them. Savage doesn’t make the parts. So, yeah.. Ah well, I’m still a 110 fan for building.

I remember looking at their AR-10 size offerings the last couple of years because I was trying to decide whether to buy or build a .338 Fed and thought in general all their large frame ARs were quite overpriced compared to the competition. Doubly so for their AR-15s, plus they seemed utterly generic.

Sad because I really like their bolt guns and have quite a few. Maybe its better they stick to their core competency.

Seems like a month or two back it was confirmed that Savage had dropped their long-frame .308 magwell depth rifles. Which makes sense as that market is beyond saturated. The short magwell market is even worse.

The market was ripe for a small frame AR-10, but they didn't make it. So they didn't sell. I wonder if Ruger is about to bury the rest of the AR-10 market with the sfar

I certainly think they will sell a lot of them. Heck I've rolled my own ARs for years and I might even get one, but I'll have to check into how proprietary the internals are.
If Ruger (and/or other manufacturers) could come up with a standard for small framed AR-308s I think they would create a new market segment that would eventually usurp the large frame AR market.

For now I'm so deeply invested in DPMS pattern large frame ARs that I'll stick, but watch and maybe pick up an SFAR out of curiosity.

Hard to get 51-55mm cartridges into short magwell dimensions, and that has always been the limitation. That, and having two sort-of standard patterns for the longer frames has been an issue.

No thanks! The Small-Di…, I mean “Frame”, was yet another answer to a question nobody asked! But whatever. Yeah, they’ll sell because people like “chiny” new things after all. And before long some guys who just started in this hobby 13 days ago, are gonna tell us how much more incredibly accurate-lier the Small-Brai… (FRAME! I meant Frame!) is over any other AR.

Together with two shooting buddies, we just purchased three Savage MSR 15 2.0's.
Honestly, for the money, really nice rifle.
A nice trigger, compared to other rifles in this price range.
Great feeling slim handguard from Magpull.
And grouping is acceptable so far... (it's on the border of 2 MOA currently, with 55 grains FMJ from Norma)
I added the ACE ARFX stock, a BAD lever, DPMS Miculek comp, UTG metal flip-up sights, Holosun 510C and now it's ready to race with me.
I honestly like it a lot.

I’m waiting for stripped Ruger SFAR lowers and bolts to hit the market. I will be buying one and can see a Proof Research carbon barrel in my future.

Are they compatible with standard barrels? Don't their proprietary bolt faces preclude that?

Or does Proof have a history of being able to "make it work"?

Do they have handguards that work with any known "pattern"?

Your right wasn’t thinking about the proprietary barrel extension that is probably involved with their bolt.

Well until they get the above sorted out, I’m out. I prefer assembling my own AR’s.

Since it's a brand new product, if you want to tinker you may have to buy a complete rifle and tear it down to see which parts mesh well with industry standard pieces.

I’ll be patient and wait for others to get that information out. I’m in no rush.

I bought one and love it because of the weight. I am using a Trijicon 1-8 on it and it weighs less than my AR-10 w/o scope. I started on M1's so it has been a little more than 13 days, my brain is fine and my @#$% is fine too. Thanks for the concern though.

I agree with the Capt! I think after years of non-stop buying combined with inflation, we are going to see a big dip in the gun market. A fall flyer just came out from the local sporting goods chain and almost all prices for guns hovered around the 700-1000 dollar mark. My buddies and I just threw it in the trash. That is honestly beyond my impluse buy range and I already have most things I need/want.

On the other end, the local military style rifle store is starting to run some crazy sales. They have a huge surplus of AR style rifles and are off loading them at big discounts. I did pick up a Daniel Defense M4V7 from them because their prices were so low. This was a total impulse buy; they got me!

This seems like a logical time for folks who really aren't AR companies to drop them.

I guess we will see what the market sees as trending next month at SHOT Show.

As an unrepentant Savage Fanboi, I would have loved to get just the side charging competition receivers.
As an Irish of Dutch decent, and raised Scot, I couldn’t see paying that much for a Savage!

Now is definitely a great time to get premium parts inexpensively.
