Surviving a gunshot wound

Approximately 2 weeks ago I was shot in the pelvis by a 7.62x39. By a miracle only one vein needed repaired. The x-rays look like I took a shotgun blast. But the structure of my pelvis is solid. I'm off narcotics already and am getting by on Tylenol and a muscle relaxer. I can gimp around, go to Church, etc. But can't get a straight answer on proposed recovery time.
It looks like target shooting and deer season is going down the tubes. I probably will be switching to squirrel hunting for this year except when my nephew or brother can go with me.
Talk to your doc about getting a handicap permit. Then you could shoot from sitting in your truck or ATV

I don't need one. I walked about 8 miles in the woods on opening day. Part of it was carrying a 30 pound pack and rifle because I was carrying enough great and food to keep my 3&4 year olds warm and fed. The walking loosened everything up and I can move better than before.

Holy crap!. Glad your ok. I thought I had it bad last week having a prostate biopsy. I swear the doc was using a nail gun but I'd do that over rather than being shot. God bless and the best of luck on your recovery.
LOL...had it done three times. Understand your 'pain'.
BTW all were negative but finally had to have a TURP. Still negative but can now sleep all night.
WFIW....do not want to get shot. I try to be careful when drawing and holstering during CCW drills.

Sorry to hear that. Thankfully, you had someone looking over you guiding the bullet's trajectory so the damage was no worse than it was.

I was shot in the back in 1977.

Even when you physically heal, the experience changes you. I don't mean you're going to turn into a "gun-grabbing liberal", but you will look at life differently. Embrace the transformation.

I shot this young doe this morning. I had worked my way about 400 yards from my Jeep. Had to drag it 100 yards to a skid trail. Then crawl my way down to it. The rock crawling was harder on me than dragging and lifting it.
I went overkill on my rifle this year and am carrying my 240Wby so I don't have a tracking job.

Thats an unbelievable recovery! I'm proud for you.
It is nothing short of a miracle. I'm grateful for every hour of every day now.
I started on woods roads and worked up to relatively flat timber. Now I'm back in stuff that is steep. It has been the most fun rehab I've done. My 3&4 year olds have been trailing me in the woods and learning to navigate. They do surprisingly well.

Let me guess, you are at the least in your early 40's and have done physical work outside for the bulk of your life. You also spent a lot of time outdoors when you were a child as well.

Persons with that kind of background tend to have far shorter recovery times from even the worst of injuries. Well done and don't let anything stop you. BTW- you have just been given the title of hero.

I'm shocked she went that far. That picture makes it look like the round nearly amputated that leg.

And great to hear you are getting so much better. Enjoy the venison.
It was hanging by a flap of skin.

I'm 35. Spent my entire childhood outside hunting, fishing, or working on the farm. Even when I worked EMS. I still logged as a main income.
I'm not a hero. I just do as much as I can. It's a miracle I even lived.

I agree about the miracle. Keep in mind I've worked ER at Elizabethtown KY and DC. Each and every patient that refused to give up to a major illness and injury got the title from me. My respect sir.

One option to speed up or improve recovery is plasma rich platlet therapy. It is expensive but damn sure works. I have had shoulder issues from dozens of dislocations 30 years ago. Recently the shoulder started getting worse despite years of rotator cuff therapy, it basically was toast. Then last year my ortho told me I need a replacement - no way. I was bummed big time because it bothered me at work, at home, sleep, I couldn’t swim, it was bs. This navy spec warfare guy who went through the same replacement threat by a surgeon told me he tried the stem cell/platelets injection with excellent results. So I bit the bullet and started my series of 5 injections last September and immediately had improvement. I have one more visit to go and my shoulder is like it was 20 years ago, not 100% like it was in my 20’s, but much better than it could be otherwise, even more so than my expectations. I also got a deal on second joint during therapy and chose my ankle, which had been aching and swollen for decades. It has now shrunk to almost the same size as my other one and barely aches.

So just in case you have a little trouble getting back to 100%, I thought I would share this info.

Good luck with recovery. Good that you came out with an incredible story.

Thanks. I appreciate it.

I don't like to talk about this but my oldest Son shot his self when he was 2 years old. The Wife came home after a hectic day at work, dropped her purse in a chair by the table and started cooking supper. He got into her purse and got her pistol out. It was a M-60 S&W loaded with hollow points. It went through the meaty part of his hand, damaged his stomach, nicked the liver and hipbone and exited his back. He was in the hospital for 3 weeks and had multiple surgeries. He survived and is pretty much normal today except for the scars and that things like stomach virus's hit him harder than normal. The odd thing is that we never heard from the Police. I would have expected that a gunshot wound and an emergency room visit would trigger a call?
:what:
Thankfully G-d was watching over him. :)

Drug addiction is huge and it often starts with regular prescriptions. Docs are hesitant to give out narcotics in a lot of places now. Plus there is some evidence that Tylenol and Ibuprofen taken together or in sequence work as well for many people.
Opioids make me literally sick, as in throwing up sick. I find 2 aleves + 2 extra strength tylenol work well.

Yes - it is serious. I know myself because I was hooked on Percoset. I was taking four of them an hour and washing them down with a beer. That went on for a month. All I did was lay on the couch, watch TV and take pills & drink beer. At some point in that month, the kidney stone passed, but, the pills and beer continued.
One day I walked into the bathroom and flushed probably 300 pills down the toilet. The next 72 hours, as my body flushed out all the poison & every muscle in my body screamed out as the again started to work - was pure hell.

Also, an addition to acetaminophen eventually destroyed my daughter's liver & she died about 10 years ago from liver failure. She had been taking Tylenol for her migraines and - just overdid it.

Given the choice between narcotics and Tylenol, I would be hard-pressed to say which is worse - probably the Tylenol since the damage it causes can be so severe & in such a short time it can go unnoticed and ironicly, the symptoms and damage of an overdose probably make you take yet more of it.

Anyhow - my initial post was made in jest & the OP took it that way. I'm a firm believer that laughter is the best medicine.
If you take Tylenol you should take NAC (N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine), it protects your liver the while.
