Does Brass Scare Game?

You said it. Folks do not give squirrels the respect they deserve. With both how stealthy they can be and how tough of an animal they actually are in respect to how thick their hide is. You can rip a cottontail in half with your bare hands. Try that on a squirrel!

I have come to learn from my years of hunting and hearing hunting stories that ANY animal that doesn't walk out in front of the hunter and stand perfectly still at short range while waiting to be shot is seen as a smart, wiley, crafty, stealthy, tricky animal. Any animal that doesn't fall over DRT when shot is said to be tough, resilient, bullet proof, etc.

Thanks, gang. I just ordered the gun.

Expect a thorough and detailed range report once it comes in.

You should be quite pleased with it.

I can’t disagree with you on this, but I stand by what I said about squirrels.

Deer hunters usually see a heap of squirrels because they are out in the woods after most of the leaves have dropped and stilling still for an extended period of time in 1 spot. When people are looking for squirrels on purpose, they tend to be on the move walking around watching tree tops. Find an open spot with mast trees and take a seat for an hour or two.

If it has a full or Mod. barreled choke, Then you must be leading the small game, most of those single shot are shot only! Over the yrs I have seen people that tried to shot a slug from them, Pls use the right ammo for it! Good luck and have fun.

When you carry that pretty gun afield be sure to carry it such that your sweaty hands are around the shiny brass part as one would naturally do. That way, a few times out, the brass will have taken on an attractive patina :). And subsequently resist the urge to polish it or wax it.

Squirrels and trash birds that raid my bird feeders can see me inside the house through the picture windows. They carry on as usual until I go into the closet and pull out this:

There is nothing shiny on it, they recognize it nonetheless and disappear, quickly, before I ever step outside. Until I put it away they hide, I can walk around and they pay me no mind as long as the black stick is not in my hands. And you are worried about a couple of square inches of brass ;)!
