.308 Cleaning Gear Recommendations

I like a bronze cleaning rod, but haven't seen any for sale around here lately. Most of mine are one-piece aluminum ones and they work fine. Only my old bronze one piece rifle rod is bronze.

Bore snakes are my first go to when cleaning any of my weapons. They will do a lot of cleaning without any possibility of damage.

Tipton 1 piece rod, MTM plastic bore guide, nylon brush, Dewey Parker-Hale style jag, Patches= your choice. You don't need a chamber mop- I always used a T-handle pistol rod with 45 ACP brush to clean the chamber, then a dry patch to "mop" the funk out, draped over the 45 ACP brush.
Make sure the threads and male/female aspect of your rod/bore brush/jag are compatible. I would add a 308 bore snake just to saturate the bore with solvent- IMO they are a poor substitute for traditional cleaning unless you are cleaning a shotgun.
Also- add 2 glass baby food jars. Use 1 for patches and 1 for the bore snake. You can pour solvent into the jars with the items and keep them soaked and saturated- believe it or not, you will use less solvent this way. You didn't ask about solvent, but I use Mpro-7 gun cleaning solvent. It works good and is odorless. Shooters choice and Hoppes work good too, but they both have an odor and cost more if you buy by the gallon like I do.
This is the setup/items I was issued in sniper school and still use to this day.

I buy most of my cleaning supplies from Sinclair. Coated Dewey cleaning rod, Shooters Choice bore solvent by the quart, bore guide, patches in bags of 500 or 1000 and brushes by the dozen.

Here's what I use:

Bore Guide: Possum Hollow made for the action/caliber (Brownell's/Sinclair sells them, but if you go direct he'll toss in a couple extra "O" rings)
Rods: Dewey, nylon coated, one piece: several lengths and a couple thicknesses so I'm not flexing the smaller rods in the larger bores
Brushes; Nylon preferably, bronze for a couple of the problem children, a couple of my custom lapped barrels never see a brush as it's not needed.
Jags: Dewey
Solvent(s): Butches Bore Shine, Sweats 7.62 when I need to get the copper out. JB Bore Paste, mixed with Kroil when things look hopeless. Once cleaned I'll run a patch with CLP on it, then an additional dry patch to "condition" the bore. I prefer not to shoot a clean, dry barrel.

I also don't bother with a chamber mop, when needed I use a bronze brush wrapped in a large patch.

  • Tipton carbon fiber rod
  • Possom Hollow bore guide
  • Tipton nylon brushes
  • Tipton non-marring jags
  • Hornady One Shot Gun Cleaner
  • BoreTech C4 Carbon Cleaner
  • BoreTech Cu2+ Copper Remover
  • Hoppes patches
  • Gun cradle of your choice
  • Hollow ground gunsmithing driver tips
  • Brass punch kit
  • Roll pin and roll pin starter punch kit
Everything you’ll need.

I like a Stainless rod. Keep it clean! It won't embed grit, which is what can damage your rifling. Drill out a few. 243 cases 1/4" through the flash hole for bore guides. Work well from chamber or muzzle. Whatever. 30 caliber bore bronze brush you can find cheaply and a nylon one for applying copper solvent. LOTS of. 30 cal patches and some. 45 or shotgun patches to trim down when you want a tighter fit. I use 2x 45 patches soaked in Hoppes for a chamber mop. I prefer a stainless slotted tip, but brass is usually what you find.. Just be aware brass will give you a false positive for copper fouling. Sweets 762 or Barnes CR10, a can of Hoppes 9 or Shooters choice for light cleaning, and a can of JB80 for the outside and to lightly coat the bore when finished with the copper solvent. GTG!

The only thing Im really picky about is the rods. I prefer the coated Dewy rods for my rifles. Those tips and jags work for pretty much everything.

Everything else is whatever I can find for cheap and use across the board. The brushes all wear out about the same, and for patches, I either buy the large 2.25x2.25 in bulk and cut them down as needed, or just buy bulk cotton flannel at Walmart and cut it into patches.

One piece cleaning rods, either polished SS or coated, a good bore guide (non negotiable), bronze brushes...not plastic, patches, JB Bore Paste when needed (Patches or VFG/Tipton felt pellets), your favorite bore cleaner(s), my current favorites are KG-1 & KG-12, but I also like Sharp Shoot R bore cleaner and Carb Out, as well as Bore Tech Eliminator and Carbon Cleaner. I have Dewey rods which work great, but I bought a Bore Tech rod on sale last year and it's phenomenal.

I cleaned my rifle this afternoon, have a one day PRS Match next Saturday. Used my little Endoscope bore scope to know when I was done, didn't get it squeaky clean, but pretty close, this barrel is showing its age. Time for a new one early next year.

Still cleaning in the old wood shed, almost ready to move to my shop that I finally got power too. Just need to mount a vice in there somewhere. In the end there will be at least two in there.

One thing about a cleaning rod, measure from the muzzle to the rear of the stock. Then buy a cleaning rod long enough to go all the way through the barrel and leave enough so that the handle stops at the rear of the stock.

The first time you drag your knuckles across the top of a stock, should be your last. Thank me later.

Slip2000 Extreme Weapons Lube and other products go hand in hand with Boretech Eliminator copper solvents.

These are 100% biodegradable, non-hazardous, no odor (makes wife happy) and use science to do most of the work.

What kind of clamp set up in the vise?
SAC arca clamp bolted to a steel plate with a piece of 1" square tubing bolted and welded to the bottom of the plate. Clamps to the built in arca cut on the MPA chassis. I thought I had a pic of it, but can't find it.

Thanks for the responses everyone. I'm still stuck on the bore guide. Is it needed for a bolt action rifle? I assume it is, the only bore guide I've ever had is a Wheeler Delta Series for .223; but I see alot of youtube videos of guys not using them when cleaning. Also, I've seen alot of guides for AR10, is a bolt guide different?

If it's a good idea, what brand/model do you like?

It's a great idea, won't clean without one, Possum Hollow, 21st Century, semi custom ones, etc. Kind of like oiling a gun, just use something.

A Possum Hollow with a guide I made to keep the rod more centered.

Thanks, I saw bad fit reviews of the possum hollow, why I didn't buy one even though I wanted to. :(

Their bore guide is designed for Rem 700 bolt diameter. What diameter is the bolt on the savage?

Thanks, but no idea, I don't have it yet. I'm not seeing anything anywere either. My friend told me I need the 700 a few minutes ago.

Everyone has their own cleaning regimine ans it seems as though people want to go internet fisticuffs over their way. I use an aluminum rod or stainless. I use the Tipton coated jags. So when running a bore copper remover I don't end up with a bunch of false positives. Brass brushes are the only way for me and will never believe the nylon brush crowd.
