So far we got four deer in New York State
My friend Ed got a small one on the first day. Then on the 3rd day Mel shot a small deer and shortly afterwards Ed shot a nice small racked 8 point.
Then the next day I shot a decent size doe.

Tomorrow is the opener in Pennsylvania. I will be hunting down there with my brother on Saturday and Sunday.
We still have close to twenty new york deer tags and we have six Pennsylvania deer tags.

I’m glad you chimed in, I’ve been watching to see updates from your trip.

I went out tonight to see what would wander by my blind, and this nice meat buck came by,

There will be plenty of meat to go around here now.

It's been many years since I hunted deer with iron sights, last big game I shot with this gun and irons, was a moose and that was long time ago...

This year the deer activity has been wonderful in my area. While scheduling didn’t allow me to hunt as much as I usually do, I and the other hunters in my group always had shot opportunities. About ten minutes into my first sit I had a doe come in much faster than usual, not running but determined. I was sitting there looking the wrong way, but was able to shift and raise a vz24 8mm mauser when her head was behind a tree (wnc woods, we have lots of those). When she calmed down and stepped out I took a heart shot. I hate heart shots but it’s all I had that wasn’t obscured by brush. She was close. She circled at the shot then ran down hill about seventy yards. No blood but even in the thick stuff she was easy enough to track by disturbed leaves. I found her piled up next to an old fallen down barn. A friend was hunting the field behind me, so I didn’t haul her out right away. I drug her sixty yards to a two track the opposite direction from that field and waited until he was done before going to get a four wheeler for complete retrieval. About five minutes later he shot a button buck so I broke in the new dump cart with two deer instead of one.

That night I let a button buck go, and my cousin missed a doe. We saw five deer in that sit.
Next morning I was after another big doe or a buck. I’m not an antler guy, although I admire them like most, but I have about three days to hunt this year so I wanted body size for the freezer. I got distracted by a sound and looked off to the left. When I turned back this guy was smelling where my cousin missed the doe the night before. It was sixty yards, and a Winchester 70’s .308 round covered the distance quickly. The shot went just behind the shoulder and exited behind the offside ribs. He ran in a circle and crashed after fifty yards (ish) just in the tree line. This was a load I’ve been wanting to test on game, so I’m glad I got the chance (load information below).

His antlers were really strange. Made for a decent picture though. The Winchester is a .308 Winchester shooting a 150gr Nosler partition. The bullet performed well passing through a good bit of deer, probably close to two feet. That’s what I hoped to test. Terminal ballistics: it obliterated two lungs and the liver and still exited.
The mauser shoots a 160gr Barnes ttsx. I’ve been using those in that gun for years and they have always worked. That one went through the heart taking out the ventricles (severing them from the atriums) and taking out the lungs.
I spent the rest of my hunting time with my son trying to get him one. He elected not to shoot a few times for safety reasons, and that made me exceedingly proud. He wants his first deer SO BAD, but I’m happy he chooses safety (in these cases, not knowing where the bullet would go after passing through the target).

sorry so long. Happy hunting!

edit: if you care both of those pics are exit side

Looks good but what is the dish on the left? Stuffed and rolled venison something..? o_O
Ya, rolled back strap with cream cheese, cherry and jalapeno peppers wrapped in bacon, back strap was marinated in soy sauce and W sauce overnight, cut the strap 1/2" thick to roll. Cooked on the grill until middle hits 135-140°. The right plate is just the small tips of the strap butterflyed and wrapped with bacon. Sea salt, black pepper and garlic powder to season both.

This elk was sheltering from the storm about 50 yards from me when he exploded at a dead gallop. As elk will do he kept thick fir tree cover between him and me as he ran down the mountain. I knew from experience the only chance I had was to hope he stopped in an area where I could still see him and that it was going to be a longer shot if I was that lucky. While he was running out of my sight I ran to a tree about 10 yards in front of me. I got a sight picture in the scope with my forearm hand alongside the tree, not super stable but better than free handing it. I put the scope on the only area that I would be able to get a shot through if I even saw him again. At the same time I did this he took a hard left into the area I was watching and stopped behind a small tree. Lucky me.
My scope was turned down to 3.5 and no time for anything because I knew he was going to takeoff in a second. I shot and he took off and went about 50 yards and stopped behind another small tree. I felt good about my shot but standing off hand at 250 yards I have enough minor wiggle to have to time the shot.
So now I can see is the top of his horns but his hind quarter is in the view behind the smaller tree. I decide I’m gonna put one in his hind quarter because I don’t want to chase a wounded elk if my first shot wasn’t as good as I thought. I was literally squeezing the trigger, a 3 pound trigger with very little travel, as the elks back end collapsed and he fell behind the tree. He was dead by the time I got down to him and I was happy with my first shot and not ruining a couple of good roasts from his hind quarters.

The snow, terrain, long and well planned shot with an improvised rest all add up to a well deserved elk. Great job!

I put together a custom Kimber rifle (.308 Win) for deer & elk this season less than a week before the start of the season. I have quite a lot of Remington Hog Hammer 168gr TSX ammunition that I was given by the engineer that developed the load when I worked for the company. I figured I'd try it and hoped that it would be good enough to use this year. Rifle as shown with 5+1 is 8lb 6oz.

First three shots bore sighting went into just about the same hole. A quick zero adjustment followed by a couple of shots at 200, 400 and 500 yards and then dialed back to 100 yards for a 5-shot group. That'll do I thought.

Less than a week later this guy got in the way at 225 yards. One shot, through and through, hardly any meat damage and my first time using the gutless method to get the quarters, backstraps and tenderloins. I probably won't get this mounted.

Late to the party- 5 sits during archery season and all I saw were the "out of range" subspecies of white tail. Corrected that this AM as the NW Fl gun opener was this weekend. This is probably a 3 year old NW Fl doe, taken at 45 yards with a model 700 in 243, topped by a Vortex 3-9x. Double lung. She ran about 75 yards before giving it up- a bit further than what I have normally had happen in the past. The ammo for this season is Norma white tail, 100 grain soft point.

Next up is the other pictures of momma Grizzly and her cub, my Daughter found them up the mountain behind our place. Obviously she decided to hunt elsewhere and leave momma alone.

Opening day of rifle season here in middle Tennessee. Shot another one of these strange deer.

I’m in Middle TN also - was hunting near Columbia this weekend, and kept having war possums charging around in the leaves and distracting me. When I’m squirrel hunting I don’t hesitate to plug them with a 22 Mag or my 38, but I didn’t want to spook the deer and really wasn’t too interested in seeing what a 308 Soft point would do to them…worried about the splatter radius.

I hunt a bit west of Columbia. I had two possums come in just before sunset while on the stand later that same weekend of rifle season. Possums sound even more like deer than squirrels do when they sneak up on you.

Finally put some meat in the freezer this morning. 250 yards with the Fierce Carbon Rival in 300 Win Mag loaded with 180 grain Winchester Ballistic Silver Tips. Deer dropped like someone kicked her feet out from under her. Several deer came out within five minutes of the shot and all of them walked over to check on her. Never seen anything like it in my life. That included a young buck who tried his best to drag her to her feet. Really unusual behavior, especially considering we’re still a few weeks away from the rut here. E98BD656-D672-4016-9A04-62C11F77485C.jpeg

Is that gun a drilling or a SxS shotgun? Hard to tell from the photo.
