Any of you guys and gals using the buck vanguard for gutting or anything really. I’m looking hard at the wood handle model. Thanks Bob

I like the knife design. But 420HC isn’t my favorite steel. You can get it razor sharp but it dulls easily. If that doesn’t bother you it is a good knife

they make a version with S30V steel that I like better. Cabelas sells that version and it may be available elsewhere. It was worth the cost to me

I got one on my side as I type. It’s my favorite knife. Yes the 420HC isn’t the greatest, but it sharpens easy. It has great ergonomics and is excellent for any knife task. I really like mine.

But it won’t take any abuse like batoning. They have a square transition from the tang to ricasso and will break there if given hard “not knife” use.

I usually sharpen on either a soft Arkansas stone or a fine DMT then strop.

They also made a run in 5160 spring steel, from what I have read. Though I believe them to be uncommon.

I'd like to have one, but I'm not
going to pay what one costs.
I used to have a good many expensive
knives and guns and the different
things that people spend money on,
but I've gradually sent most of them
down the road to people that would
enjoy them more than I would at present.
I still have several Buck brand of
various configurations and they're
all good useful knives. I personally
never had a problem with sharpening
although I know many people that do.
I found one of those Buck Vanguard at
a garage ( estate?) sale a while back at
a very reasonable price, but someone
else was faster and got it ahead of me.
Maybe someday . . . .

I been looking for a spare myself. Uh, thinking the carbon version if I could find one.

I found one in a fire pit at a campsite one time. If I remember right. About an inch of the blade was broken off. I guess whom ever had it, broke it then tossed it in the fire.

I bought a Vanguard 8-10 years ago. It is beautiful I hesitated using for fear of marring it somehow. 3242419-C-9-FC3-41-A3-A22-A-5-EBE28-CCD251.jpg To protect it bought this thing to use. It’s a Buck 685 (same basic blade shape and blade steel) More recently I picked this thing up off Amazon $13.00. An amazingly good knife for the price.
