Which side of the fence are Springfield Armory and Rock River Arms on this time?

Every year, over and over...for decades. This time they are banking on having "the moment". Utterly cavalier disregard for Civil Rights and SCOTUS rulings on the RKBA that should spell things out how they will likely be taken to the woodshed in court if they succeed. Oh...and ban the .50 BMG, too 'cause that's what everyone banning "Assault Weapons" does. And no FOIDs for anyone under 21 (our girls have had theirs since ages 8 & 9...they are now 18 & 19 and I still must sign and have notarized forms when they renew them this month that certify that I am responsible for whatever they might do with a firearm; that I am liable). So suddenly NO HUNTING or TARGET SHOOTING w/o an adult guardian present if you are under 21? Utterly pointless madness but what do they care; this is Illinois and LAWMAKERS love to make LAWS!

People are going to defy draconian gun laws. What worries me is that once this defiance becomes widespread and "normalized," it's going to spill over into other areas until we have a completely lawless society. The gun controllers are so out of touch that they have no idea of the Genie that they are uncorking.

The template for this is alcohol Prohibition. Just as the activists that want to ban guns think they are doing the Lord's work, so too did the ones that wanted to ban alcohol. We saw what happened with crime and lawlessness in the 1920's. The moral of this is that you can't get ahead of cultural norms. People wanted their alcohol then, and they want their guns now.

Many are...5 years, 9 months until I can retire. I'll consider options then.

Illinois has tried stuff like this before without success. If they ever manage to get anything like this into law, that's the day I leave for greener pastures. Iowa, Missouri, Indiana... about every state bordering, "The Land of Lincoln" is a better place to live. In fact, I'm planning to move anyway. Tired of living in a blue state.

The baseline of gun ownership -- even in a state like Illinois -- is too high for any confiscatory scheme to make more than a small dent. The people won't cooperate. They'll hide their guns before they turn them in.

Illinois is not a blue state. Chicago is the blue stronghold. Because the population is concentrated there, Chicago can call the tune.

Ironically, though, that's where the illegal guns, and the violent crime, are. The Chicago leadership can't control its criminals, so it takes its frustration out on law abiding gun owners.

I drive through Illinois regularly and I see a beautiful state filled with, it seems, good, hardworking, common sense people. It seems a shame that all these folks have to live at the whim of the political machine in Chicago. Same phenomenon in a lot of other states actually… NYC, Twin Cities MN, etc. Something about living in the city for generations really warps folks’ view of reality, it seems. In any case, I hope this law doesn’t pass because challenging it in the courts is a long, drawn-out process and if the courts ignore the rules they’re supposed to follow, there’s little recourse.

Around 96% of Chicago's murders were committed by blacks and/or Hispanics in 2011, the last year for which data like this is available from what I have seen. 96%. And these two demographic groups vote predominantly Democrat and so, it is politically expedient for Democrats running for office in Chicago and Illinois to stay on the good side of these groups. They can't really do that by promising to build more prisons so they can lock them up and throw away the key. They need a whipping boy so. Guess who that is.

It would be a mistake to conclude from this that the murderers were voting Democrat. No, the murderers are apolitical and don't vote at all. It's the rest of the Black community that has to deal with the impact of crime. They can do this in one of two ways: they can support more gun control (which has proven to be ineffective), or they can arm themselves for direct protection against the criminals. More and more are taking the latter course. In Illinois, arming themselves may be nominally illegal. So the breakdown of law and order continues apace.

Chicago, AKA Chiraq, has been a liberal stronghold for a very long time. And yes Chicago, and Springfield, controls the entire state and gets their way politically. This has gone on for decades. My parents grew up in the Quad City area and I still have some family there, but most have moved out of Ill. a long time ago. When the majority of my family still lived in the state, they were in rural areas outside of Rock Island and Moline.

Unfortunately nothing will change until Chicago changes. Missouri will end up the same way if we aren't careful too. We have Columbia, Kansas City, Springfield, and St Louis that try to control the state as it is now.

It's not that simple. They have friends and kin who do vote and they're all pretty much on the same page when it comes to mass incarceration. To be honest, I'm not a fan of police states and mass incarceration either and I can understand their reluctance to embrace it. But the fact remains, law abiding gun owners are their scape goat and so I will point that out.

Until the states adopt the electoral college model - or the cities depopulate - nothing will change.

Chicago does not have control over part of its administrative area where crime, violence and shooting deaths and injuries are out of control...therefore to give the appearance that they are taking measures to mitigate the situation they resort to passing legislation to "punish" the peaceful. Sort of like military boot camp...one guy screws up and the rest of you pay for it.

Yeah, I know that. But Chicago effectively makes it a blue state. Where Chicago goes, so goes the whole state whether we like it or not. There are good people downstate, but we're outnumbered. Illinois has Gun Sanctuary counties downstate. But They can only do so much.

Amen . If you cut Chicago off from the rest of the state, tow it to the middle of Lake Michigan....and sink it...Illinois would be a very red state. This bill will go nowhere, because a lot of democratic lawmakers in this state are shooters and gun owners who wouldn't have got elected with anti gun views. Many Sheriff's have already come out and stated they will refuse to enforce this law if it passes.

I can literally spit and have it land in Illinois, unfortunately most the ones moving to Wisconsin and Iowa are bringing their leftist ideals with them.

Political musing: if these cities are bound to vote blue, I wonder if it’s possible to change the conversation at the local level so that a vote for a Democrat isn’t a guaranteed vote for radical gun control. It seems to me that this is an agenda pushed through tradition and from the top, not necessarily the reasoned belief of all the constituents. Even in an urban area. I wonder how we promote this alternative message?

It's Illinois what else would you expect.
It's all coming from northern Illinois (Chicago area) because I have talked to many guys in southern Illinois & they think it's a bunch of BS.
