Is Fire Lapping a Barrel Worthwhile?

A thread at Sniper's Hide , and an article by Rob01 about fire lapping.

Seems your barrel is a likely candidate. No mention of throat erosion.

I have the kit and lapped the barrel of my rifle and my .22 pistol. I am pleased with the results. It probably will accelerate erosion a minute amount, but not enough to be concerned with in a hunting rifle. The gain in cleaning ease and consistency and probably accuracy will outweigh that.

High end barrels are hand lapped and thus have a better finish than fire lapping could provide. Fire lapping is a users way of getting closer to a target barrel's finish without the time, effort and skill necessary to hand lap. Sounds like your rifle could really benefit.

Bottom line...custom barrel=NO, factory barrel=Yes

BTW, the process is kinda tedious to warn you. You load 5 or more rounds of each grit. Then when you shoot, you clean the barrel every 5 rounds so the grit is working on the barrel not more fouling. Probably takes 45 minutes plus loading time. Good luck.
