Here is a question - What is a reasonable amount of primers to keep on hand?
I used to think a 4 year supply was good. In 2010 that got bumped up to 8 years. In 2012 it went to 12 years.

Well, it depends on your risk tolerance.
We are 3 years into this shortage and things are mostly back in stock. Primers are priced higher, but they are available. Powder, bullets, brass, tools, etc are widely available. Based on this, and the last few shortages, 12 years seems excessive.

Well I guess it depends on your rate of fire. :) Nice thing about primers is they have a long, long shelf life. I am currently loading using primers dating back to the mid 90s, mostly CCI and they all work just fine. How many to keep on hand? Guess it depends on how fast you use them but at my age a ten year supply may outlive me.

I shoot twice a week, at least 100 rounds of centerfire each trip.
Earlier this year I started to think about the "at my age" thing.

12 years seems excessive.
To some.

Not sure I would say "widely available", how about can be found in about a two week time of hard looking.....if you are lucky.

For your insurance company that would be 20,000 in a residential dwelling. National Fire Safety code. ;)
Hard to count em after the fire though. Imagine the litigation if just 19,999 spent primers were found.

But seriously, I’m guessing there is embedded somewhere in my insurance policy or local laws that simply references that code (as it does other private standards setting organization codes) and says something like “homeowner agrees to follow this code.”

That's easy to get around..............just don't have insurance......................................................................................................3......................2..........1.................

ETA........I don't think I'll ever get to the number that we think is enough.......;)

I'm in the same "boat" as you considering how many primers do I need at 72. I'm starting to think stockpiling reloaded ammo is not as good an idea as stockpiling primers. Primers would be much easier for my wife to dispose of than reloads. So I guess I need to start shooting more reloads I've socked away and get my ammo stash down a good bit before making more. It's a good "problem" to have I guess.

I could have written this, but I’m only 71.

Do you have a will, my new best friend? :D
I have seen siblings hate each other and resort to things I never thought possible after the last parent dies off. Everything is spelled out in my wife and my will. The kids also understand exactly how things will play out. When our mom passed her wishes were clear. There are four of us and everything was to be divided equally with a few things designated. We all had a copy of mom's will and now each of our children has a copy of our will. My son has access to my gun safe and how guns are to be divided among the grandchildren.

This is a regional issue for local stores. Things are hit or miss on the shelf.

Just about everything is in stock online. Not 24/7 every day, but things come and go and are generally available with a little bit of leg work. Sure, some specific favorite powders or bullets may still be rare, but for the most part just about anything a reloader could want is available. You may have to order from a few different places on different days of the week, but it is no where near the scarcity it was 1-2 years ago.
This has been my experience, anyway.

Prices, well, that's a different discussion.

In ‘93 I decided to start keeping an unreasonable supply of primers on-hand. In ‘96 we moved and I decided keeping an unreasonable number of bricks was a stupid idea so I went back keeping a number that was more reasonable. I have a “lifetime supply” assuming my cardiologist is right and I only have 20 years left, at most.
