"In The Gravest Extreme" and "The Truth About Self Protection" by Massad Ayoob would be a good place to start, IMO.

Being prepared for the legal and emotional s--tstorm that will happen should we have to use deadly force in defense of ourselves or others may not be pleasant, but it's vitally necessary.

Protecting oneself these days demands much more than shooting skills. The system will NOT be your friend, and knowing how to deal with that fact may well be more important to your ultimate survival than all of the 'how-to-shoot' books ever written.

Forewarned is forearmed; arm yourself, please.

The principals of personal defense by Jeff Cooper, Great book short easy read, much harder live by.

I keep reading to learn am much as I can. THere are no second place winners in a gun fight. Another book by Bill Jordon. Dated but worth while reading.

"Principles of Personal Defense" by Jeff Cooper.

Anything by him is worth its weight in gold.

Tactical Reality. Louis Awerbuck

Combat Handgunnery by Chuck Taylor. Great read for technics and hardware.

Theres another one by Chris Baird, but I can't remember the name of it.
I think it's called The Concealed Weapon Guide.

The Law of Self Defense: A Guide for the Armed Citizen should find a space on your bookshelf. It's author is a practicing attorney.

I second the books by Mas, Walt Rauch and Gila Hayes. I'd also like to add THE FARNAM METHOD OF DEFENSIVE HANDGUNNING (by John Farnam), DEFENSIVE SHOOTING FOR REAL-LIFE ENCOUNTERS (by Ralph Mroz) and, if you've got a few coins left over, TRAIL SAFE: AVOIDING THREATENING HUMAN BEHAVIOR IN THE OUTDOORS, by Yours Truly.

For pure shooting, you'd be doing yourself a disservice if you didn't read SHOOTING FROM WITHIN by Mike Plaxco and Brian Enos' flawless PRACTICAL SHOOTING: BEYOND FUNDAMENTALS.

Also, sit down and memorize THE ART OF WAR. Sun Tzu rocks!

One of the best books on the subject, definitely the worst title.

"Kill or Get Killed" by Col. Rex Applegate

Also "The Close-Combat Files of Colonel Rex Applegate" by Applegate and Chuck Melson

They may be more Offensive oriented than Defensive but both are worth having in your library none the less.
