Teacher kicks student in GOP garb

Associated Press
Oct. 31, 2004 12:00 AM

DURANGO, Colo.- A part-time college instructor has apologized for kicking a student because he was wearing a Republican shirt.

Fort Lewis College student Mark O'Donnell said he was showing people his College Republicans sweat shirt, which says, "Work for us now ... or work for us later" when Maria Spero kicked him in the leg at an off-campus restaurant.

Spero then said "she should have kicked me harder and higher," O'Donnell said. "To physically take that out on someone because you disagree with them, that is completely wrong." advertisement

Spero, a visiting instructor of modern languages, apologized to O'Donnell in a letter dated Oct. 29.

"I acted entirely inappropriately by kicking you, giving vent to a thoughtless knee-jerk political reaction that should never have happened," she wrote. "Before the incident, I did not know you and that you are a Fort Lewis student."

The college also formally apologized, said David Eppich, assistant to the school's president.

O'Donnell said the apology wasn't enough and he plans to file a complaint with the college.

The only phone number listed in Durango for the surname Spero was constantly busy on Saturday.

Durango police did not return a call seeking comment.

No hits for me on google.

Nice that she apologized:rolleyes: One day in HS I tossed an empty 20oz bottle at a trash can and it bounced off the rim, hitting the floor. On my way to pick it up a teacher grabbed my arm, and told me to do so. I told him I was on my way, and to let go of my arm. He told me one more time, in a stern voice to pick it up, and I think I told him to get his hand off of me before I broke it, I cant remember exactly. But I do remember sitting in the principal's facing expulsion for threatening a teacher. Maybe he should have kicked me and apologized instead of grabbing my arm. It would saved me some headache.

edit: Found it, but you have to have to have username and password to read the LA times article.

Leftists are some of the most elitist people on Earth. That superiority complex causes another tendency of theirs (violence) to show up from time to time.

They assume we are the same way. That's why they want to disarm us. They assume that they will control government, and hence, the badged-ones who will carry guns on their behalf.

"Work for us now ... or work for us later" isn't elitist?

no, its sarcasm. its taking the typical liberal view of republicans and turning it into a witty tagline on a t-shirt. not an advertisement to kick someone.

I think you're mostly right, but would like to point out that the "superiority complex" is often a mask to hide deep, dark, ugly fears of inferiority. Scratch a bully, and you'll almost always find a coward. Same principle.

"Work for us now...or work for us later"

I've not seen that one. I have seen "Join us now...or work for us later" and recognized as sarcasm and satire of the old motor oil commercials that had a mechanic stating "Pay me now, or pay me later" when addressing regular oil changes in one's automobile engine. I'd get one myself, 'cept I'm not a Republican. and the Tee-Shirt has a huge Elephant on it.

I concur with El Tejon. Press charges for assault and battery (correct?) and sue for violation for civil rights.

I have to wonder what the outcome would have been had the roles been reversed, the student attacking the instructor.

The kicker should be aware that in these days of equal rights and women's lib, females ought not expect the consideration that ladies were rightly accorded in previous generations. Simply going up to some stranger in a restaurant and kicking them is all too likely to generate a physical response which they may find most unpleasant - and painful. She is very lucky the person she assaulted exercised uncommon restraint.

Hard to argue with Waitone's summation of the desired result.
