Here goes again, i put this in the wrong place. I am going to try to put together a Marlin lever gun in scout configuration preferably a 30/30.Any idea's about barrel length, sling, stle of stock etc.

Take a standard .30-30 Marlin 336 with the 20" barrel.

Add a XSS (used to be Ashley Outdoors, now it's Express Sight Systems) Scout Scope mount and whatever scope you want (2X Leupold or Burris my pick).

Add the XSS Ghost ring sights to back that up. Total cost minus scope is about $450 ($100 for the scout scope mount, another $100 for the GR sights, about $250 to $300 for a used or new Marlin).

Basic Uncle Mikes sling and a butt cuff for rounds (another $25). You're done.

What MrMurphy said...

I'm pretty much doing the same thing with a "Revelation" 30-30 that I got in trade, with the exeption of the Scout scope. While I love the idea of scout scopes on quick little rifles, I don't see the need for one on a 30-30 (at least in MY area,) especially considering the additional cost. Ghost rings should do very nicely.

I wouldn't do much. I own a Marlin 336 and regard it as a poor man's scout. Jeff Cooper even references the Win 94 when discussing the lineage of his scout concept. Mine wears a simple nylon sling because a proper shooting sling just doesn't work on a lever gun. I also use the UM butt cuff and am totally happy. As far as the stock, I suppose you could use a Ramline synthetic for strength and light weight. Otherwise, my Marlin's stock seems strong enough and fits me well. Are you sure about a scope? Good aperture sights abound and will not hinder your abilities within the modest range of the 30-30. They are cheaper, trimmer and well... correct on a lever gun.

MrMurphy's pretty close to what I'd do. If I had to put a scope on it, I'd look for a low power variable, something in the 1.5x4 or 1.5x4.5 range on it for a little bit more latitude.
