I have been tossing around the idea of having a psuedo scout rifle "built" for me. I have been thinking about getting a cheap non collectible 8mm Mauser of some sort and putting a 308 barrel on it. I have been told that the action will work fine with 308. I also plan on having the barrel cut to 20" or so and having an NP3 finish on it. Of course topping it off will be a scout scope mount so I can still use stripper clips.

I know it would be cheaper to just buy a 308 but that would be easy. Any advice on where to start? I was thinking of a VZ-24 to start with. Or would a Yugo M-48 work? I have heard that they aren't large ring. Thanks.

And like I said, I know it would be cheaper to just buy a 308 rifle I think it would be satisfying to do something like this.

Great idea. There are several gunsmiths who make a specialty of this kind of scout conversion. I saw one guy who specializes in Enfielod conversions. Can't remember the website, but I'll be a search would turn it up.

If this works out let us know. I would love to have a Mauser in original military trim but chambered for .308.

Consider getting an Ishapore Enfield. They are already in 308, carry a 12 round magazine, and are MUCH faster to shoot than any Mauser. If you don't want to do the conversion, you could even get a Gibb's No.7 carbine and then scope it. Done deal. I bought mine a few years ago, paid $200 for it with 200 rounds in stripper clips. The barrel was perfect.

I've considered an Enfield but like I said, I have a thing for Mausers, plus I don't want to just buy one. That's too easy. I think it would be satisfying to have a heap of parts and doing everything I can to make it into what I want. Even if I have to get someone else do some of the work. :uhoh:

This place is great

"I'd like an ice cream cone. Has anyone ever had one?"

"No what you need is an apple pie, it's more filling"

"No, if you want filling what you need is a basket of fries, just put some whipped cream on top it's kinda like ice cream."

:neener:

I'm looking at permanently scout mounting an M48 and I've been told that a Duo mount for a Contender pistol will radius on the mauser barrel. Just something to think about as you work this out. M48's are large ring, but an intermediate action istead of long. It would still work fine with a .308 and would be my choice. I'm leaving mine 8X57, but I have this weird attraction for that cartridge.

Don't get all uptight

I'm just poking alittle fun.

But no one has discussed "fast repeat shots". It was only stated that the Enfield had a faster action than a Mauser. I haven't been sold on that yet.

Having shot my own Lee-Enfield No.4 Mk1 with stripper clips next to my dad's WW1 issue Gewehr 98 kb (not a 98K it's a full size rifle, turned down bolt) with stripper clip...... The Lee-enfield's definitely got a slightly faster action.

Ducktape, you could get a commercial hunting Zastava Mauser and stick the scope and stripper clip guide on it. :) New, Mauser 98, and easier to find stuff for.
