I've recently decided that I 'need' ;) a hammerless revolver to add to my collection. Something easy to get out of a pocket holster. Does anyone have a favorite that they would recommend? Why do you like it? I like the Taurus 85 and SW 642 but am open to any suggestions.

Would love a 942

A S&W 642 carries easy in a pocket. It's my favorite snubby.

Taurus makes some nice lite weight snubbies.

At the lower end of the spectrum Charter 200 makes a nice little (12 oz) .38 called the Offduty. With the boot grips it's very easy to pocket carry.

Here's what I toted....

My favorite was a Smith model 638 "bodyguard." Although not truly hammerless, it had a shrouded hammer which made it even more versatile. The gun weighed in at approx 15 oz so my entire carry package (gun, ammo, holster) weighed less than 20 oz.....very comfortable all-day carry.

Weight-wise, I carried a Smith 340SC hammerless scandium which I did not particularly like. It tended to unseat bullets and I had to use 120 gr bullets and up. Recoil with .357 mag loads was fierce, to say the least.

Although I have never owned the following hammerless snubs, I've heard great reports on them.
The Smith 642 is reputed to be about the all-time best hammerless out there, a great compromise between weight and shootability. I have also heard glowing reports about the model 342 scandium. Taurus also makes several hammerless models and I have found the triggers on many current Taurus models to be surprisingly good.

Weight-wise and depending on how you intend to carry it, I'd keep the weight closer to 16 oz, especially if you plan to pocket-carry.

Who sez the snub revolver is dead? There are so many new models out there that you should be deliberate and very careful in your search. Oh well, looking is half the fun.

my favorite is my 24/7 gun, my Taurus 650. Never so much as a hitch, and gets better everytime I shoot it. The wife liked it so much she had to get one of her own.

Another vote for the 640-1 here.....

The stainless steel is reasonably corrosion resistant, the finish won't peel of if you use the wrong cleaners, and it is much more pleasant to shoot with than the lightweight alloys. :)

This is the only "hammerless" I've bought... so I guess that makes it my favorite.

Easy carrying gun, and not bad to shoot.

I rather like my Taurus 85...nice trigger...decent self-defense accuracy. Heck, it is cute :)

Ok, now my problem is . . . . I want them all!

I really appreciate all the comments and advice. This is one great forum! :)

Any S&W scandium/titanium w/o hammer is awesome. 642 is also nice, used to have one, but wanted a lighter gun.

The S&W 640 is the only internal-hammer revolver I have. This type of firearm fills a small niche, so I doubt I'll ever buy a companion piece. But if I do, I'd get an SP101 to keep it company.

All around favorite is my S&W 640.

My 642 is what I most often have with me. It resides in a Hedley pocket holster. I don't care to shoot it much, but it's small, lightweight, and packs a halfway decent wallop.

Then there is my Taurus 650 CIA. It's a little heavy, but it's .357, so I'm willing to forego pocket carry and use an IWB or belt holster.

Did someone say hammerless? Spurless maybe? How about a stainless Taurus 85 sporting 'hip grips' and a 'tyler-t'. Why, because I haven't bought a Smith yet.

I prefer the Smith M649 or the M38. Both are in .38 Special.

I usually shoot them double-action, but like to have the ability to shoot single action at longer ranges.

The model 38 with the shrouded hammer still allows a single action shot. A handy surprise if you cock it and fire it through your coat. Tough on your coat but tougher on surprised BG's!

I think it's hard to go wrong with any of the models listed, give them a try and choose the one that works best for you. Often carry a M38 myself.
