For those who have shot these pistols or read range reports that differentiate them...

I've shot a 228 in 9mm and a .40 229 DAK. For shooting up to 20 yards or so, which is the more accurate, 229 in 9mm or .40...or is this a wash, all dependent on the shooter's ability.

Second, if i am determined to get a 9mm, which of the three is more accurate:

  • 228
  • 229 DA/SA
  • 229 DAK

Or again, is it simply dependent on the shooter because they are all similarly accurate in real world experience.

Thanks!

Shooter's ability.

You will have to be awfully good to determine if one gun is more accurate than the other shooting freehand (without a rest). It will come down to the individual guns. If you took 100 9's and 100 .40's, the average would probably be darn close, but the difference between the most accurate and the least accurate in each caliber would be significant.

Owen pretty much hit it, every gun has its own personnality when it comes to bullets and powder, even 2 of the same caliber and model. the only real way to tell is in a ransom rest or if you are REALLY good sandbag rest. The gun that you shoot best is the most accurate. guns are like shoes, they have to fit.

Yeah, notice that there are no other responses. Just needed the confirmation that I wasn't missing somethig about any of these. Thanks to both of you.

If you must have a 9mm...I recommend the Sig 228 DA/SA. The most balanced of the ones you mentioned above. And slightly lighter.

I just got a Sig P228 and I think alduro is right on the money. I've only had it out to the range once but with several types of ammo it shot pretty much to POA with all of it.

I have both 226's and 229's in 9mm and in 357 SIG w/.40 bbls. IME, the 357 and 9mm beat the .40 for accuracy, but not by too much. Both SIGS are more accurate than .40's in Glocks, again IME. Re the 229 and 228, I've shot a 228 a good bit, and while it's a great gun, the couple fewer ounces and diff construction of the 228's slide doesn't make a dime's worth of difference in feel, balance, accuracy or shootability for me.

Considering they are all sig's, its doubtfull you would be able to see a noticble diffrience.

I HIGHLY recommend the 228. Mine has 5k+ rounds through it, never ever (knock on wood) had even a single hiccup. Had my gf shoot it lots and even her friends (some of whom can't shoot other guns due to limp wristing) and still not one hiccup. It is more accurate than I'll ever be. The trigger is awesome for a DA/SA and the best thing of all is the balance, it simply fits into your arms and becomes an extension of you. I've fired both the 229 in .40 and the 229 in 9mm and I find that the 228 has much better balance than both of them.
