Dear Phil,

Can the battle to protect airplane passengers from terrorists armed with .50 caliber sniper rifles be achieved? After all, terrorists can and have bought these weapons in the U.S. easier than they can buy a handgun.

And when you or I are on a plane landing or taking off, we are at risk, because .50 caliber sniper rifles can target airplanes from more than a mile away, outside of the airport security perimeter. .50 caliber sniper rifles can ignite the fuel tanks with an incendiary round and kill everyone aboard.

But there is hope that the enablers of the terrorists can be defeated.

In the autumn of 2004, the Republican Governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger, signed a bill prohibiting the purchase of the .50 caliber terror weapon by anyone but law enforcement and military personnel. So, right now the largest state in the union has taken a stand against terror.

Schwarzenegger's spokesman said, "He's committed to keeping the public and law enforcement as safe as possible."

As this campaign accelerates, remember this: it's your life on the line -- and you have the right to protect it.

They just said no to terrorism in California.

Now it's up to the rest of us.

As an aside, can anyone point me in the direction of some pictures of WW2 aircraft, perforated with .50-cal bullet holes, that landed safely?

I'm a good shot.....

However I believe that shooting a .50 cal sniper rifle form a mile away at a target that's probably going to be moving at roughly 200+ mph may be just a tad out of my capabilties.

for comparision get in the prone with a .22 from 100 ***** away and shoot a landing model airplane...yeah not gonna happen.

I think what they meant to say was, "It's your life on the line, and you have the right to whine, cry, and stamp your feet until the government assigns armed men to remove the inanimate object you fear from the hands of good, law-abiding citizens, and subsequently coddle you in any way necessary to make you feel warm, fuzzy, and generally content with your surroundings. At any cost!"

Dichotomy

It seems to me there's a real dichotomy here. Liberals are worried about something impossible happening... Someone shooting an airliner down with a 50 from a mile away. Don't bother them with any facts, please.

And those of us who are more worried about the TSA requiring body cavity searches sometime soon.

I especially liked how California was all, "omg we had to ban it before terrorists got a hold of it!"
And now they're happy they did...
How many OTHER states are there in the US can they get the gun? Bunches? But then again, how many places in the entire WORLD can they get this and many more equally and more powerful weapons?
